Capitals release 2023 Development Camp schedule

Not only will the Washington Capitals be turning its focus to free agency on July 1, but it will also host the first day of its annual Development Camp, Saturday.

While we don’t know the full roster yet, super-talented 2022 first-round pick, Ivan Miroshnichenko, is in DC while several 2023 Calder Cup champion Bears players could be at camp, too.

Wednesday, the Capitals released the schedule for camp. The practices, which are open to the public except on Independence Day, will be held from July 1 through July 5 at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, ending with a three-on-three tournament.

Behind the scenes of the Hershey Bears’ 2023 Calder Cup championship celebration at Giant Center

HERSHEY, PA — The Hershey Bears celebrated the franchise’s twelfth Calder Cup championship at Giant Center on Saturday afternoon. The event marked the first public event fans could attend since the Bears lifted the AHL’s championship trophy in Southern California early Thursday morning. Alternate captain and inventor of the ROAR, Mike Vecchione, scored on a rebound to in overtime of Game 7 to eliminate the first-year Coachella Valley Firebirds in thrilling fashion.

The championship ceremony began at 3 pm and was open to the public. There were so many Bears fans in attendance, many of the players, who had barely slept since winning the championship days before, stayed hours after they were scheduled to leave so no one left empty-handed.

Nothing about the celebration or the fan support felt minor league.

Logan Day still hasn’t taken his jersey off after winning the Calder Cup

Hershey Bears head coach Todd Nelson said during the Calder Cup Finals that defenseman Logan Day has “ice in his veins.” Little did we know that Day also has superior olfactory sensory neurons in his nose. By that, I mean he has an incredible internal tolerance for stankiness.

We know this because Day has not taken off his jersey since suiting up for the Hershey Bears in Game Seven Wednesday night. The Bears proceeded to win the franchise’s twelfth Calder Cup after Mike Vecchione scored in overtime of the longest Game Seven in AHL history.

It is now Friday — nearly two full days later — and Logan’s jersey full of sweat, alcohol, and perhaps other things I can’t imagine remains glued to his body, perhaps never to be taken off again.

The Hershey Bears are back home in Central Pennsylvania and now a proper celebration is set.

The Bears will host a party at Giant Center on Saturday that is free to the public.

Where to buy Hershey Bears Calder Cup championship merch

The Hershey Bears became Calder Cup champions for the twelfth time in franchise history on Wednesday after defeating the Coachella Valley Firebirds 3-2 in overtime.

Not long after the goal light was lit by Mike Vecchione and captain Dylan McIlrath lifted the Calder Cup, Bears championship merch went on sale.

Capitals hire Mitch Love as an assistant coach

The Washington Capitals announced on Thursday that they have hired Mitch Love as an assistant coach. Love is the first coach to join Spencer Carbery’s staff from outside of the organization.

The 39-year-old Love spent last season coaching the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers and was considered a “prized AHL coach”, garnering interest across the NHL.

Love was rumored to being getting consideration for the Calgary Flames open head coaching position. He will primarily handle the Capitals’ defensemen.

The Hershey Bears are 2023 Calder Cup champions!

The Hershey Bears did it!!!

The Capitals’ AHL affiliate are Calder Cup champions for the first time in 13 years after defeating the Coachella Valley Firebirds 3-2 in overtime of Game Seven. Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre scored goals in regulation. Mike Vecchione scored the dramatic series-ender 16:19 into the first overtime. Hunter Shepard made 45 saves for his 14th and final victory of the postseason. Shepard was named postseason MVP and received the Jack Butterfield Trophy at the game’s conclusion.

Connor McMichael scores goal in consecutive games for Hershey Bears in Calder Cup Finals

Washington Capitals 2019 first-round pick, Connor McMichael, has scored some big goals for the Hershey Bears during the 2023 Calder Cup playoffs. But he saved his best for last.

After watching the Bears fall behind 2-0 to the Coachella Valley Firebirds in Game Seven, McMichael scored on a second period power play jolting his team back to life.

Special group of Bears players looking to bring Calder Cup back to Hershey in final game together: ‘We all have to leave it on the line’

The Hershey Bears’ first possible elimination game of the 2023 Calder Cup playoffs will be their last. After defeating the Charlotte Checkers in four games, the Hartford Wolf Pack in three, and the Rochester Americans in six, the Bears will attempt to win the franchise’s league-leading twelfth championship in the AHL’s final game of the 2022-23 season.

Not only does the Game Seven matchup against the Coachella Valley Firebirds mark the definitive end of the series, the game will likely prove to be the end of an era for one of the deepest teams in the AHL. Many of the Bears’ biggest contributors in the postseason will be free agents in July including defensemen Dylan McIlrath, Logan Day, and Gabriel Carlsson; goaltenders Hunter Shepard and Zach Fucale; and key forwards Sam Anas, Garrett Pilon, Mason Morelli, and Riley Sutter. The Capitals, who are looking to go younger next season, could also pluck several stars from the current team including Beck Malenstyn, Connor McMichael, Joe Snively, and Ethen Frank for the NHL roster.

It’s all or nothing tonight for this special group. But if the Bears are feeling that stress, they weren’t showing it hours before puck drop.

Washington Capitals announce 2023 Development Camp dates

The Washington Capitals will host a Development Camp for a second straight summer, though it appears the end-of-camp scrimmage will not be a big event like in years past.

The Capitals’ 2023 Development Camp will run in the days immediately after the 2023 NHL Draft from July 1 through 5 at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va.
