Alex Ovechkin asked Nicklas Backstrom about his contract negotiations every day. They hugged when he re-signed.

Alex Ovechkin, a potential unrestricted free agent in 2021, was very interested in the progress of Nicklas Backstrom’s contract negotiations with the Washington Capitals during the season and for obvious reasons. The two close friends have had a historic amount of success together in the NHL and would like to finish their NHL careers together. “Nicky and I would love to stay,” Ovechkin said during the preseason.

According to Backstrom, Ovechkin was persistent in getting inside information and updates from the Swedish center on things were going. Backstrom represented himself during the negotiations.

“Ovi came up to me every day since me and Mac started talking and asked me, ‘How’s it going? Any progress? Any progress?'” Backstrom said during a press conference at Capital One Arena to announce his signing. “It’s been like that every day.”

Nicklas Backstrom signs five-year, $46 million contract extension with the Capitals

The Washington Capitals announced early Tuesday morning that Nicklas Backstrom signed a five-year, $46 million contract extension with the team.

The deal will keep the Swedish center in Washington DC until July 1, 2025.

Here is a photo of Alex Ovechkin

The Caps took the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex for a tune-up ahead of their game Saturday night against the New Jersey Devils.

After practice, Caps fan Miranda Rosenfelt took her pride flag to get a photo with some of the Capitals players. The flag was part of a giveaway if you purchased a specific ticket package during the Capitals recent Pride Night at Capital One Arena.

Alex Ovechkin stopped and took a rare photo with Miranda.

Washington Capitals use Pride Tape during pregame warmups

Tuesday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators was the Capitals’ Pride Night. While Braden Holtby, the Capitals’ “Hockey is for Everyone” ambassador, didn’t start the game in net, he led his teammates in celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.

Many players taped their sticks with rainbow Pride Tape which supports the LGBTQ+ community. The sticks will be auctioned off in June to support the SMYAL organization, who help local at-risk LGBTQ+ youth.

Alex OINKvechkin competed in the 2020 Winter Classic piglet races

The 2020 Winter Classic took place on Wednesday to kick off a whole new decade of hockey, with the Dallas Stars coming out on top. But the real excitement came during the intermission with a staple of the Texas State Fair: piglet races.

And, with it being the Winter Classic, all of the piglets were given appropriately hockey-themed names.

The Washington Capitals will help raise another service dog in 2020

Captain was in the building at NBC Sports Washington on Monday to give a Very Important pupdate on how his training has been going so far.

While Captain’s handler, Deana Stone of America’s VetDogs, was chatting with Rob Carlin, she revealed some very exciting news: the Capitals will help raise a second, very good doggo in 2020.

Stephen Strasburg signs seven-year, $245 million deal with Washington Nationals

Great news, Nats fans! According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg has signed a seven year, $245 million deal to remain with the team.

Strasburg’s contract is the largest ever in MLB for a pitcher in both total and annual average value. Per Passan, the average annual value of the deal is $35 million.

Update 5:10 PM: The Nationals have officially announced the signing.

Nicklas Backstrom is negotiating a new contract without an agent because of his ‘good’ and ‘honest’ relationship with Caps

Nicklas Backstrom confirmed Elliotte Friedman’s report Monday that he is negotiating a contract extension with the Washington Capitals without an agent. Backstrom spoke to reporters in San Jose after Capitals practice.

“I feel like I’ve been here long enough. I’ve seen everything. I don’t think there’s anything to hide,” Backstrom said. “We’ll see what happens here going forward. I just felt like I wanted to do it myself. I have a good enough relationship with the organization where we can be honest and talk. That’s just how it is.”

Chandler Stephenson was not on the ice for practice due to a pending ‘transaction’ (Updated)

On Monday, Capitals senior writer Mike Vogel reported Chandler Stephenson was not on the ice for practice. With the Capitals due to take on the San Jose Sharks in the first game of their West Coast road trip on Tuesday, Vogel added that a roster move involving Stephenson will likely happen before then.
