Report: Seattle Kraken believed to be name for NHL Seattle franchise

Early in November 2019, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported that the NHL’s upcoming 32nd franchise team in Seattle would make an announcement on their name prior to the All-Star Break. With the break come and gone for many NHL teams, hockey fans have been wondering when that announcement might happen.

On Wednesday, John Hoven of mayorsmanor.com, joined SXM NHL Network Radio and reported that a name has allegedly been decided on: Seattle Kraken.

Braden Holtby will play against Nashville Predators, gets consecutive starts after bye week

After a strong game in net against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, Capitals head coach Todd Reirden confirmed to the media on Tuesday that Braden Holtby would be the starter for their game against the Nashville Predators. Ilya Samsonov had won five of the Capitals’ eight games before the bye week.

“Braden’s going to play again tomorrow,” Reirden said to the media on Tuesday, when asked whether Holtby would start against the Predators. “Liked his game a lot [Monday]. Think he’s definitely earned that opportunity after the last game. Want to get him right back in there. It was a response game for him after the break, and that’s as good as maybe we’ve seen him in the third [period] this year.”

Report: The Washington Capitals will not play a game in Russia next season

The Washington Post reported in November that the Washington Capitals were interested in playing an NHL regular-season game in Russia as soon as next year.

“We’ve talked about different things overseas, and we’ve talked about some in Russia or some in Sweden,” Capitals President Dick Patrick said to The Washington Post then. “We’re not sure; it’s a league decision. They’ve talked about China, too, which would be like an exhibition game. I personally wasn’t too intrigued with that. I think it is just too hard on players during training camp. It could happen next year or the year after. If we are going to do it, it would probably be one of those years.”

Tuesday, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Capitals will not play a game in Russia next season, but the NHL is still exploring the possibility of having the Capitals and Blues play there during the 2021-22 season

Elite League defenseman Zach Sullivan comes out as bisexual ahead of Manchester Storm Pride game

Over the weekend, the U.K.’s Elite Ice Hockey League, in partnership with You Can Play, held its first official Pride weekend.

Support for the weekend was league-wide, with each individual team selecting a local LGBT+ charity to work with, and has seen heavy promotion across social channels and in national and local news in the lead-up to the games.

Initiatives for Pride weekend ranged from the usage of Pride tape, specially designed Pride jerseys, raffles to win the shirt off the back of a player, as well as auctions for the game-worn Pride jerseys, Pride merchandise for sale, and proceeds from the 50/50 raffle going to directly to LGBT+ organizations.

That prolific support from the Elite League and its teams proved to be more than just lip-service, when Manchester Storm defenseman Zach Sullivan chose to come out as bisexual on Sunday, making him the first player in the Elite League to do so.

Kunlun Red Star to play remainder of KHL season in Russia due to coronavirus outbreak

The Kunlun Red Star will play the remainder of their KHL season in Russia due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to goaltending coach Dusty Imoo.

Kunlun were scheduled to play two more of their regular season games in Beijing, one on February 2 against CSKA Moscow and another on February 24 against Dinamo Riga. The February 2 game had already been postponed due to the celebration of the Chinese New Year from January 25 to February 2. Both games will now be played at a to-be-determined location in Russia.

Hershey Bears rally late, secure win over Providence Bruins with Christian Djoos shootout goal

The Hershey Bears’ final game before the AHL All-Star break was a nailbiter.

Despite breaking the scoring deadlock during the second period with a goal from Liam O’Brien, the Bears surrendered two goals to Providence’s Peter Cehlarik in the third. Providence went on the penalty kill due to a cross-check from Jack Studnicka late in the third, and the Bears pulled goaltender Pheonix Copley to give a 6-on-4 advantage. With just 21.5 seconds left in the third, Philippe Maillet scored to bring the tally even at 2-2.

Providence could not solve Pheonix Copley through overtime, nor the shootout, with Copley turning aside both shooters he faced. Maillet scored on his shootout attempt, and Christian Djoos ended the game with second round winner.

Gerardo Parra wants to return from Japan to throw first pitch for Nationals home opener

The Washington Nationals’ home opener is set for April 2 against the New York Mets, and it’s slated to be a huge event for fans in attendance, who will get to see the raising of the first championship banner in Nats franchise history.

While several faces that made up the Nationals World Series-winning roster will not be returning for the 2020 season, Gerardo Parra has expressed his desire to make the trip from Japan for the home opener to throw out the first pitch.

“I want to throw the first pitch,” Parra said to NBC Sports Washington in an exclusive interview. “I’m working, but it’s not in my hands. I want to talk to the Japan team, but like I say, I don’t want to say no because you never know.”

The Soto Shuffle makes MLB The Show 20

The Washington Nationals’ World Series-winning season was filled with tons of incredible and iconic moments. Two of them have even made it into the upcoming video game MLB The Show 20.

Outfielder Juan Soto’s crotch-grabbing, between-pitch “Soto Shuffle” and the Nationals’ dugout dance parties were both featured in the trailer released on Wednesday.

Also, featured: Anthony Rendon in an Angels uniform. But let’s bury that until the end.

Alex Semin calls Alex Ovechkin the best hockey player in the world right now

Former Capitals forward and current captain of HC Vityaz, Alex Semin, took part in the KHL All-Star weekend in late January.

As part of the festivities, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan polled some of the players on a broad range of topics, from what they like to splurge on, to who the best hockey player in the world is right now.

Semin stuck by his fellow Young Gun and name-twin when he gave his answer: Alex Ovechkin.

Evgeny Kuznetsov jokes he may ‘fight’ Ilya Samsonov over video games

On January 15th, Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov joined John “JohnWayne” Casagranda of Caps Gaming to play some NHL 20 and FIFA. There was some good-natured chirping throughout the Twitch stream, as Kuznetsov and Casagranda went head-to-head, with a few interesting insights into the Capitals’ gaming habits, including Kuzy and rookie goaltender Ilya Samsonov’s daily battles on both NHL 20 and FIFA.

Samsonov even mentioned the two played against each other regularly to The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell in November, saying, “He’s constantly losing. He doesn’t have enough experience. He’s playing poorly, to be honest.”

But when Scott Allen caught up with Kuznetsov after the Twitch stream, he denied that it was quite that bad. “We pretty much play every day,” Kuznetsov told Allen. “Last three days, he won one game. We play 10 times. So, suck on that, Sammy.”

However, it might not be as simple a victory as Kuznetsov is making it out to be.
