Captain was in the building at NBC Sports Washington on Monday to give a Very Important pupdate on how his training has been going so far.
While Captain’s handler, Deana Stone of America’s VetDogs, was chatting with Rob Carlin, she revealed some very exciting news: the Capitals will help raise a second, very good doggo in 2020.
“Since Captain has been such a hit with the Caps, with the fans, with the entire Caps nation, what’s next?” Carlin asked.
“So, rumor has it that Ted and Lynn Leonsis with Monumental Sports are sponsoring and raising the next Captain,” Stone responded. My heart grew three sizes immediately.
While the original title of the NBCSWSH video read Capitals to sponsor a second Caps Pup in 2020, all of the teams under the Monumental Sports umbrella will assist with the training of the next dog, including the Wizards and Mystics.
A follow-up article by NBC Sports Washington added that, “Ted Leonsis and his wife Lynn made the commitment as a holiday gift to Monumental partners and friends after being inspired by Captain’s journey in D.C.”
Captain, according to that same article, is due to remain with the Capitals for another 12-14 months, after which point he will travel to New York to complete his training with America’s VetDogs.
The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell speculated about what the new puppy’s name will be, and Monumental Sports replied that their sources told them it is Scout.
Our sources are telling us Scout.
Off the record 🐶

While there is no information about the puppy due to join the MSE teams in 2020 beyond the name, or whether Scout will make their debut as Captain did on a red carpet, we know that we will love and adore them just as much as we love Captain.
Here’s hoping that this becomes a yearly tradition!
