Nicklas Backstrom isn’t just promoting Swedish beds made out of horse hair. He’s now putting his name behind a Swedish energy drink, IQ Fuel.
IQ Fuel’s “Backstrom Edition,” is a blueberry and lime flavored drink that — according to the company, and as translated by RMNB’s Magnus Cadelin — is Backstrom’s “new favorite flavor.”
Backstrom has been doing promotion for IQ Fuel alongside his trainer Andreas Öhgren for a few months, from wearing the brand on his clothing, to filming a yet-unpublished ad at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, to keeping a can in his stall on roadtrips.

The “Backstrom Edition” can features Swedish blue detailing, Backstrom’s signature, and a call out to his jersey number with the Capitals. Oh, and along the side it has Barry Trotz’s 2017-18 playoffs catchphrase: hydrate!
Per IQ Fuel’s website, the Swedish company are focused “on bringing out the next generation products in sports and health.” They offer four variations of energy drink: a blueberry and lime “Backstrom Edition,” a passionfruit “Bratt Edition” (named for New Jersey Devils forward Jesper Bratt), as well as a non-sponsored mango and pineapple, and grapefruit version.
“Our products are Swedish made, with triple filtered water to optimize absorption in the most efficient way,” IQ fuel say about their drinks. “Our products are free from caffeine, taurine and sugar which makes it a perfect choice for sporting kids.”
All four flavors of IQ Fuel appear to be available for pre-order on their landing page via an email address. There is currently no pricing information, but from IQ Fuel’s Instagram page, they appear to be leading up to a full launch of the drink soon.
If this is Backstrom’s new favorite drink, we can’t wait to try it!
