Anthony Mantha placed on fourth line as Capitals lines get shakeup before Blue Jackets game

The Washington Capitals took a quick flight up to Columbus for a one-game Metropolitan Division road trip against the Blue Jackets. They’ll do so with a pretty interesting shakeup in their forward lines mainly due to Nic Dowd not traveling with the team.

That shakeup will see Anthony Mantha skate as the fourth line’s left wing. It’s an interesting move for a player that was originally acquired more for his offensive abilities but has shown to be a reliable two-way forward.

Tom Wilson says he could have returned a month ago, but ‘I wouldn’t have been the player I wanted to be’

Capitals forward Tom Wilson has been an integral piece of the team’s core for some time now since being drafted by the organization in 2012 and given his NHL debut shortly after. When he went down with a torn ACL in the Caps’ first-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers last May it was a devastating blow for the player and the team.

Wilson was amid the best season of his nine-year career at that point. He had recorded a personal best 52 points (24g, 28a) in 78 games and made his first-ever All-Star Game appearance.

With a return from offseason surgery to repair that torn ACL coming in the very near future, the 28-year-old winger says it’s most important for him to pick right up where he left off.

Nicklas Backstrom on his pending return from hip surgery: ‘I have no pain and I’m able to skate and move the way I want to’

Nicklas Backstrom held a press conference with the media for the first time since Training Camp on Wednesday. The Swedish centerman had just gotten off of the ice after being a full participant in Capitals practice yet again.

Backstrom is in the final stages of a very complicated rehab process that started when he first underwent hip resurfacing surgery back in June. He has been progressively ramping up those rehab activities since mid-November when he practiced with the rest of his teammates for the first time.

Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson are ‘close’ to returning but neither will travel for game in Columbus

Veteran forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson are still seeking to make their season debuts after undergoing respective major surgeries over the offseason. Both players have been highly involved in recent team practices and were again skating at Wednesday’s optional practice.

Caps head coach Peter Laviolette says that both of the stars are close to returning but they will not be traveling with the team to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.

Another overtime slip up dooms Capitals to just one point on home ice: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals played their first game in 2023 on Tuesday night against the Buffalo Sabres. The Caps took a third-period lead in the game but were unable to keep it as they fell in overtime 5-4 to Tage Thompson and…yea, pretty much just Tage Thompson.

Bit of an up-and-down game. Weird one.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is receiving a large show of support at the Capitals-Sabres game

Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills, collapsed on the field during the Monday Night Football game between the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals. The event shocked and worried the entire nation.

Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and CPR was performed before medics were eventually able to get his heart started again. Hamlin was rushed to an area hospital and remains in the ICU sedated and in critical condition.

Tuesday’s game between the Sabres and Capitals marks the first time a professional sports team from Buffalo has played since the tragic incident.

The Sabres and Capitals are going all out to show support to Hamlin.

Alex Ovechkin’s goal-scoring at age 37 is nearly unprecedented

Alex Ovechkin scored 50 goals in a season for the ninth time in his career last season. The then-36 Ovi became the oldest player in NHL history to score 50, eclipsing a record once held by Hockey Hall of Famer John Bucyk (age 35) for over 50 years (1970-71).

Unsurprisingly, after starting the 2022-23 campaign with 26 goals before the first half of the season has concluded, the now 37-year-old Ovechkin is creating even more age-related hockey history.

And oh yeah, he’s on pace for 54 goals this season.

Jakub Vrana placed on waivers by Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Jakub Vrana on waivers Tuesday. Vrana had been in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins for a three-game conditioning stint following his return to Detroit’s active roster after entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in mid-October.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first announced the news on Twitter.

TJ Oshie says he expects to be in Caps lineup against Sabres after missing six games with upper-body injury

The Washington Capitals will take the ice inside Capital One Arena for the first time in 2023 on Tuesday night against the Buffalo Sabres. It will also be the first time this season that the Caps and Sabres match up with one another.

Veteran winger TJ Oshie says he expects to be in the Caps’ lineup after missing six games with an upper-body injury. Oshie has been skating regularly post the league’s holiday break.

The Capitals won 11 games in December. It turned playoffs (?) into playoffs (!).

On December 3, after a 5-2 loss on the road in Calgary to the Flames and with still building injury issues, the Capitals’ chances at a run to the Stanley Cup Playoffs come springtime looked rather worrisome. The team had collected just 24 available points out of 50 — a paltry .480 standings-points percentage.

A month later and with the calendar flipped to 2023, the Capitals have turned that narrative completely around. The Caps finished off the month 11-2-2 and surged all the way back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
