Hardworking road effort bears hockey standings points fruit: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals got back onto the road for the first time in what feels like forever and promptly took down the New Jersey Devils with a grind-it-out, hardworking 4-2 effort. The Devils made a game of things in the third period as Charlie Lindgren and the team’s defense bent but ultimately did not break.

Outside of a few spells, including that rough two or so minutes in the final frame, the Capitals put together a really encouraging, well played road game.

Martin Fehervary suffers lower-body injury against Devils, misses third period

The Washington Capitals got some unfortunate injury news for the third-straight game as defenseman Martin Fehervary departed action against the New Jersey Devils early with a lower-body ailment.

After missing a handful of shifts near the end of the second period, Fehervary was announced to be out for the rest of the game by Capitals PR at the second intermission. Fehervary had been skating on the team’s top pair with John Carlson.

“It’s not ideal, so we’ll reevaluate,” Spencer Carbery said after the game. “We’ve got some issues on the backend.”

Jaromir Jagr’s number to be retired by Pittsburgh Penguins later this season

The Pittsburgh Penguins will retire the jersey of legendary winger Jaromir Jagr. Twenty-two years after playing his final game in Pittsburgh, the two-time Stanley Cup Champion’s famous number 68 will be raised to the rafters of PPG Paints Arena on February 18 during a pregame ceremony.

Jagr was drafted fifth overall by Pittsburgh in the 1990 NHL draft and went on to record 1,079 points (439g, 640a) in 11 seasons with the Penguins before being traded to the Washington Capitals in 2001. The 51-year-old Czech legend is still considered an active player for the team that he owns in the Czech Extraliga, the Kladno Knights.

Charlie Lindgren and wife Mikkayla announce Lindy’s Lineup, an adaptive youth sports program

Washington Capitals backup goaltender Charlie Lindgren and his wife Mikkayla announced on Friday that they’ve started a program called Lindy’s Lineup. The goal of the program is to provide opportunities in adaptive sports for local youth and children enrolled in special education classrooms.

The Capitals’ press release outlines that the Lindgren’s were inspired to start the program due to Mikkayla’s background and current career in pediatric occupational therapy.

Nic Dowd activated from injured reserve ahead of game against Devils, Anthony Mantha placed on IR

The Washington Capitals announced a slew of roster moves that will impact their lineup against the New Jersey Devils on Friday night. Those moves include the activation of veteran center Nic Dowd from injured reserve after he has missed the past nine games with an upper-body injury.

To accommodate Dowd now taking up a spot on the 23-man roster again, the Capitals also transitioned Anthony Mantha to the IR after he took a deflected shot to the head in Wednesday’s overtime loss to the Florida Panthers. The moves indicate that Dowd is ready to make his return to the lineup as the team takes on their Metropolitan Division back-to-back this weekend.

Capitals send Mike Sgarbossa back to Hershey Bears, place Trevor van Riemsdyk on injured reserve

The Washington Capitals sent forward Mike Sgarbossa back to the Hershey Bears, Thursday night.

Sgarbossa was originally recalled by the Capitals ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Florida Panthers after center Evgeny Kuznetsov had missed the prior two days of practice. Kuznetsov, a game-time decision, ended up playing and Sgarbossa was healthy-scratched.

In addition to Sgarbossa’s demotion, the Capitals also announced that they placed defender Trevor van Riemsdyk on injured reserve.

Unforced errors cost Capitals lead and one point: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals wrapped up their season-long home stand with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday. While the team built on some of the good they’ve started to show this season, they matched that good with enough bad to cost them a lead and eventually the extra overtime point.

At the end of five games in a row at Capital One Arena, the Capitals came out with a 3-1-1 record. They’ll take that. Could be a lot worse.

Anthony Mantha leaves game against Panthers after taking deflected shot to the head

Anthony Mantha’s best game of the season was cut short early due to a scary and unlucky injury.

After notching two goals earlier in the contest, Mantha was struck by an Evgeny Kuznetsov wrist shot that ramped up off of defender Mike Reilly’s stick. The puck hit Mantha in the left side of his head near his ear.

The big winger needed help to get off of the ice and had a towel pressed to his face.

Trevor van Riemsdyk will not play against Florida Panthers, Evgeny Kuznetsov to be game-time decision

The Washington Capitals will be without defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk when they take on the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night at Capital One Arena.

Meanwhile, Russian centerman Evgeny Kuznetsov, who has missed the last two days of practice with an illness, will be a game-time decision.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery revealed the news while speaking to reporters ahead of the game. The Capitals are wrapping up a season-long home stand against the Panthers before getting back on the road for a back-to-back this weekend.

Nic Dowd and Joel Edmundson practice in non-contact jerseys before Capitals optional morning skate

The Washington Capitals got some positive news on the injury front on Wednesday morning. Both Nic Dowd and Joel Edmundson took the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex before the team’s optional morning skate on Wednesday.

The two veterans donned non-contact jerseys which indicates that they are ramping up their return progression but won’t be available for the Capitals’ game against the Florida Panthers.

After playing in the first two games of the season, Dowd has missed the last two weeks with an upper-body injury. Edmundson fractured his hand just days into Training Camp and has yet to make his debut with the Capitals.
