Charlie Lindgren to start against Vegas Golden Knights, Darcy Kuemper healthy enough to back up

The Washington Capitals will square off with the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night. For the third time in five games, they will be led out onto the ice by goaltender Charlie Lindgren.

Lindgren will get his fourth start of the season after recently downing both the Columbus Blue Jackets and New Jersey Devils in impressive outings. Regular starter Darcy Kuemper has been dealing with a minor injury in recent days but is healthy enough to return for backup duties.

Trevor van Riemsdyk and Joel Edmundson shed non-contact jerseys for Capitals’ morning skate

Trevor van Riemsdyk and Joel Edmundson took major steps towards returning to game action with the Capitals on Tuesday morning.

The two veteran defensemen hopped on the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex and neither one was donning the non-contact jerseys that they have been sporting at previous skates. The Capitals play the Vegas Golden Knights at Capital One Arena on Tuesday night.

Carolina Hurricanes to wear classic Hartford Whalers jerseys, Cooperalls for one game only

The Carolina Hurricanes are throwing it back a few decades this season for Whalers Night: In White!. The team will don the Hartford Whalers’ classic, white home uniforms on February 10, 2024 against the New Jersey Devils. The Hurricanes, who relocated from Hartford for the 1997-98 NHL season, have in recent years celebrated their Whalers past more.

These Whalers uniforms will be the third set that Carolina has worn. They first wore Hartford’s green jerseys back in December of 2018 and then wore grey/silver versions as their 2021 Reverse Retro sweater.

Spencer Carbery provides update on Martin Fehervary after injured defender misses practice

The Washington Capitals saw a whole host of injured players take the ice on Monday to get some work in as they try to make their returns to game action. One name that was notably absent was defenseman Martin Fehervary.

Fehervary was injured in Friday’s victory over the New Jersey Devils and did not play on Saturday against the New York Islanders. The Capitals placed Fehervary on injured reserve on Saturday with a lower-body injury and recalled veteran blueliner Dylan McIlrath to fill his roster spot.

Head coach Spencer Carbery was asked to give an update on the young defender after Monday’s skate. Fehervary had been skating on the team’s top pair next to John Carlson.

Capitals see several injured players skate before first practice after successful road trip

The Washington Capitals got back on the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Monday after a weekend trip up north saw them take down two Metropolitan Division rivals in back-to-back nights. Several of the teams injured players took the opportunity to get some work in before practice officially began.

Forwards Anthony Mantha and Max Pacioretty both skated ahead of Monday’s practice, while defensemen Trevor van Riemsdyk and Joel Edmundson donned non-contact jerseys to participate with the rest of the team. All four players are still currently on injured reserve or long-term injured reserve.

Ryan Leonard scores in back-to-back games for number one ranked Boston College

Ryan Leonard had a big weekend for the Boston College Eagles as the nation’s number one NCAA squad did battle in a back-to-back with the 13th ranked Maine Black Bears. The Washington Capitals’ 2023 first-round draft selection scored twice and added an assist in the two games.

Leonard now has 10 points (5g, 5a) in 10 games during his freshman season. His five goals rank tied for second on the team.

Moving on up in the Metro: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals took both halves of their Metropolitan Division back-to-back this weekend and will come home with a 6-1-1 record over their last eight games. The New York Islanders were their latest victims in a 4-1 victory on Saturday night.

They don’t have to all be pretty and this one sure wasn’t.

Veterans Day victory over another Metro Division opponent: Capitals beat Islanders 4-1

The Washington Capitals traveled to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders on Saturday night. The Capitals were looking to avenge a shutout loss to the Islanders from just over a week ago and sweep a big, road back-to-back against Metropolitan Division opponents.

Alex Ovechkin broke his scoring drought with the game’s opening marker off a set faceoff play. Alexander Romanov was the beneficiary of a miscue behind the Capitals’ net and tied the game at one. Nic Dowd batted a rebound out of the air to give Washington their lead back and Aliaksei Protas would double that lead with a shot from the slot.

Ovi added an empty netter for the cherry on top.

Spencer Carbery on Charlie Lindgren’s recent performance: ‘He is certainly earning more minutes and more starts. He’s been fantastic.’

The Washington Capitals took down a high-octane New Jersey Devils team 4-2 on Friday that saw backup goaltender Charlie Lindgren star when it mattered most. Lindgren, starting in just his third game of the season, stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced in his second victory.

After three total starts, the 29-year-old netminder has an impressive 2.35 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage. His hot start has impressed head coach Spencer Carbery and could lead to more consistent playing time in the near future.

Hardworking road effort bears hockey standings points fruit: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals got back onto the road for the first time in what feels like forever and promptly took down the New Jersey Devils with a grind-it-out, hardworking 4-2 effort. The Devils made a game of things in the third period as Charlie Lindgren and the team’s defense bent but ultimately did not break.

Outside of a few spells, including that rough two or so minutes in the final frame, the Capitals put together a really encouraging, well played road game.
