NHL posts hype video for Alex Ovechkin’s chase of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record

After passing Gordie Howe last week, Alex Ovechkin is the NHL’s second-greatest goal-scorer. The Great Eight leaped past the legendary Howe against the Winnipeg Jets on December 23 with a two-goal effort.

Now, the only man that stands in his way at the top of the mountain is Wayne Gretzky. If that sentence alone doesn’t get you pumped up, the NHL released a video hyping up Ovi’s chase of The Great One that most certainly will.

Capitals assistant coach Scott Allen enters COVID protocol, will not be behind bench against Senators

The Washington Capitals will be without assistant coach Scott Allen when they take the ice against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir reports that Allen is in the NHL’s COVID protocol The Massachusetts native is normally in charge of the team’s forward group and penalty kill.

TJ Oshie sheds non-contact jersey during Capitals’ morning skate

TJ Oshie took a major step toward returning to game action with the Capitals.

The right winger shed his non-contact jersey for the first time since going down injured. Oshie joined Tom Wilson and Martin Fehervary as the Capitals’ extras during the team’s morning skate. None of the three players will suit up against the Ottawa Senators.

Nicklas Backstrom enters COVID protocol, Capitals try to focus on the positives of its timing: ‘At least it’s now’

The Capitals’ optional practice on Wednesday saw a host of injured players skate before the team is set to take on the Ottawa Senators at home on Thursday.

One player notably absent was Nicklas Backstrom, who has been a regular at practices of late.

Backstrom did not have a setback in his recovery from offseason hip surgery. The team told The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir that the Swedish pivot is in COVID protocol.

Tom Wilson and Martin Fehervary won’t play against Senators but both are ‘close’ to returns

The Washington Capitals’ optional practice on Wednesday was one filled with injured players making progress toward eventual returns. While some players are further away than others, two key names appear to be destined for the Caps’ lineup sooner rather than later.

Those two players are Tom Wilson and Martin Fehervary who both skated in full-contact jerseys.

Head coach Peter Laviolette told the media after the skate that although neither is scheduled to take on the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, they are both “close” to retaking their spots on the team’s roster.

TJ Oshie practices for first time since getting injured against Maple Leafs

The Washington Capitals are one of the hottest teams in the National Hockey League — winners of 10 games in the month of December. And, it appears some key injured pieces of their lineup are making their way back into the fray.

The team’s optional practice on Wednesday featured several of those injured stars getting in some extra work on a non-gameday. The most notable face on the ice was TJ Oshie as he has been missing since pulling up lame while backchecking during a December 17 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Carl Hagelin skates in blue non-contact jersey before Capitals practice

The Washington Capitals held an optional practice on Wednesday at MedStar Capitals Iceplex a day after shutting out the New York Rangers 4-0.

Injured Capitals winger Carl Hagelin took the ice before the rest of his teammates. In early October, the team announced that Hagelin had arthroscopic hip surgery and would be out “indefinitely”.

Capitals make it five straight wins with shutout takedown of hot Rangers: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals made the trip up to New York City to take on the Rangers for the first time this season and left with all the points.

Their 4-0 win over a Rangers team that had won eight of their last ten coming into the action sees the Caps currently in a playoff spot in the East and is their tenth victory in the month of December.

What a great team effort.

Gina Carlson posts Christmas photo and update on John Carlson

On the same day that Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette announced defenseman John Carlson would be out longterm after taking a slap shot to the head last week, we have another update on the veteran blueliner.

This time it comes from John’s wife Gina Carlson. Carlson posted a photo of John and his three kids on Christmas Day.

Many of Gina’s followers believed the photo she posted of John was taken in December before his injury occurred. But Gina clarified, it was actually from Christmas Day this year.

How the Capitals power play is now lining up after multiple injuries to key offensive players

The Washington Capitals were without John Carlson at their morning skate on Tuesday and according to Caps head coach Peter Laviolette, they will be without him for the foreseeable future. Carlson was placed on injured reserve by the team on Tuesday after getting hit in the head by a slap shot last week.

The Carlson news, on top of losing TJ Oshie to another injury four games ago, means the Capitals are having to debut new looks on both of their man-advantage units.
