Cole Hutson named a First Team All-American in second straight season for Boston University

Cole Hutson has already played 11 NHL games with the Washington Capitals, but he received his final major NCAA recognition on Friday night.

The 19-year-old defender was named a First Team All-American (East) for a second straight season after his sophomore campaign at Boston University. Before joining the Capitals last month, Hutson recorded 32 points (10g, 22a) in 35 games for the Terriers, finishing as BU’s leading scorer.

According to BU Hockey Stats, Hutson is the 14th Terrier overall and 8th Terrier defenseman to be named a First Team All-American multiple times. His older brother, Lane Hutson, is one of those players after he achieved the back-to-back feat in 2023 and 2024.

Lane and Cole are the only two Terriers in program history to earn First Team All-American recognition as both a freshman and as a sophomore. Overall, a Terrier has been chosen as a First Team All-American for four straight years, with Macklin Celebrini also receiving the honor in 2024.

The 2025-26 campaign wasn’t an incredibly successful one at the team level for the Terriers, though, as after a 16-16-2 regular season, they were quickly eliminated from the Hockey East tournament in the quarterfinals. The early elimination allowed Hutson to join the Capitals on March 15, and he has already registered eight career points (3g, 5a) at the NHL level.

Hutson is joined on his All-American team this year by Boston College’s James Hagens, Dartmouth’s Hayden Stavroff, Quinnipiac’s Ethan Wyttenbach, Maine’s Brandon Holt, and UMass’ Michael Hrabal.
