The NHL hasn’t officially unveiled its new Hometown Remix jerseys yet, but Washington Capitals fans may have just gotten their clearest look at their team’s new design through a rendering posted by hockey uniform outlet Jersey Nerds.
On Tuesday morning, the account published renderings of 20 NHL teams’ upcoming Hometown Remix sweaters on X, claiming it had determined their designs with “near certainty.”
As of 11:30 pm EST, the post had garnered 1.3 million views on the social-media site.
Among the 20 renderings posted were the Capitals’ much-anticipated new blue jersey, illustrating how the rumored design elements might look cobbled together. The jersey features a retro Capitol Dome crest, bronze-and-black striping, marble-textured white accents, and Screaming Eagle shoulder patches.
The images quickly spread across other social media sites, including the team’s subreddit, r/caps, where reaction has been mixed. Several commenters compared the blue-and-bronze color scheme to the St. Louis Blues, while others criticized the return of the Capitol Dome logo as the primary crest, preferring the Screaming Eagle instead. Others were more enthusiastic, praising the throwback look and the return of blue to the Capitals’ uniform rotation. One fan was particularly excited about the possibility of purchasing another Alex Ovechkin jersey, which may be the last “new” design the superstar will wear during his NHL career.
While the rendering is not an official presentation of the finished jerseys created by Fanatics, the Capitals design closely matches details previously reported by Icethetics.
A league source who has seen the new Capitals jersey confirmed to RMNB that the rendering is largely accurate, though some design details differ from the finished product. According to the source, the jersey’s marble-inspired highlights and textures are more pronounced than the illustration suggests. The numbers are different and not as clean as those depicted in the rendering. When asked why the jersey was blue, the source said the remix program as a whole aimed to utilize branding colors teams don’t typically use as much and bring them to the forefront.
Icethetics also weighed in on the new batch of renderings, saying it could corroborate their general accuracy while cautioning that some individual details differed from the information it had received. “[G]enerally they’re on target,” the outlet said.
The Capitals previously teased their Hometown Remix design with the scrambled phrase “Carved in the Capital” and a close-up of the jersey’s blue fabric.
The Capitals gave a preview of the gear they’ll wear with the jersey on Monday, including blue-and-white-cuffed gloves and all-black pants featuring three vertical copper-colored stars.
The league officially announced the long-rumored, Fanatics-driven alternate jersey program on August 19. The jerseys appear likely to drop at the beginning of November, with the first team scheduled to wear them being the Florida Panthers on November 2.
