This is where the captain and alternate patches are placed on the Washington Capitals’ 50th anniversary jerseys

The Washington Capitals officially began 2024 Training Camp at MedStar Capitals Iceplex with Media Day on Wednesday, marking the start of Alex Ovechkin’s 20th career season in the NHL.

Capitals players put on their new Fanatics-created game jerseys and posed for photos and videos with Monumental Sports Network, the team’s rights holder.

During the sessions, the Capitals’ leadership group revealed how the team will handle its captaincy patches on what is becoming a busy area on their jerseys’ chests.

The Capitals, who now have jersey ads for their home and away jerseys (Caesars Sportsbook and TikTok), will also wear bold patches to celebrate the team’s 50th anniversary.

Home jerseys

On the Capitals’ red home jerseys, the ‘C’ and ‘A’ patches will be located on the left (players’ perspective), pushing the 50th-anniversary patch to the right above the apex of the t in the Capitals’ wordmark logo. The 50th anniversary patch appears to align vertically to the top of the ‘C’ or ‘A’ patches.

John Carlson modeled how the ‘A’ looked while posing for a photo with new Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun.

Away jerseys

While there are no exemplars of the white away jerseys yet, the same solution will likely be implemented for the ‘C’ and ‘A’ patches as the Capitals’ wordmark logo is the crest, and the TikTok jersey ad lives on the right.

Third Jersey

On the Capitals’ black Screaming Eagle sweater, the ‘C’ and ‘A’ patches will flip to the right and be placed on the inside of the Caesars Sportsbook ad. The ‘C’ and ‘A’ patches, created with a slanted woodcut typeface and on an angle, follow the diagonal theme implemented by the Screaming Eagle logo and stripes below. The ad, however, is not on an angle, creating an interesting dynamic for the eye.

The black Screaming Eagle sweater will serve as the team’s third jersey, which players will wear for six home dates this season.

The photos released to the media do not include the 50th-anniversary patch on the alternate sweater. That decision may have been made because the tip of the Screagle’s wings reaches high into the left chest. The team’s 50th-anniversary logo is also red, white, and blue, clashing with the black and bronze colors of the sweater. We’ll monitor this to see if it changes, though.
