Connor McMichael recently received a big honor from Hershey Bears head coach Todd Nelson. The Capitals’ 2019 first-round pick was named an alternate captain of the Bears with veteran Mike Vecchione out with an injury.
McMichael, 22, rocked the A during Hershey’s 5-2 victory over the Charlotte Checkers at Giant Center on Saturday. Hendrix Lapierre scored a hat trick in the game.
The Washington Capitals might have had a pretty incredible first against the Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights the last two nights.
With usual alternate captains Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, TJ Oshie, and Tom Wilson all out due to injury, Peter Laviolette gave Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitry Orlov the A’s and the opportunity to serve under Alex Ovechkin on the leadership team.
This appears (but is not confirmed) to be the first time in franchise history there were all Russian players as Capitals’ captains during games.
Note: It’s worth pointing out that this is almost impossible to 100 percent confirm due to the historical data of alternate captains not being public.
Tom Wilson, who many believe to be a future captain of the Washington Capitals, will get the chance to display some more of his leadership ability on Friday night when the Capitals take on the Arizona Coyotes.
Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette announced that Wilson would be one of the team’s alternate captains after the Caps’ morning skate. Wilson will join John Carlson with an ‘A’ on his sweater due to both Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie being missing from the lineup due to injury.
This will be the second time under Laviolette that Wilson will sport an ‘A’ after he did so against the Penguins last May.
“He’s typically a guy that throws an ‘A’ on”, Laviolette said. “He’s been a great leader inside of our room.”

Long rumored to be a future captain in Washington, Tom Wilson will have another opportunity to show off his leadership skills Saturday night against the Penguins.
Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette announced that Wilson would be one of the team’s three alternate captains after the team’s morning skate. Wilson is expected to be an alternate captain along with Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie. With Alex Ovechkin out of the lineup, no player wore the captain’s “C” on Thursday.
For Wilson, it’ll be the first time in his career he’ll sport the alternate captain’s “A” during a regular-season game.

When two-time Stanley Cup champion Brooks Orpik retired over the offseason, it opened up several holes on the team. Batya’s absence gave a roster spot for a defender on the third pairing. It also left a hole on the team’s leadership committee, as Orpik served as an alternate captain for the team.
Tuesday morning, the Washington Capitals officially announced that John Carlson would be Orpik’s replacement.
Carlson joins captain Alex Ovechkin and alternate captain Nicklas Backstrom as one of the team’s leaders on the ice.
With Redskins football on TV and most of the Bruins stars playing an exhibition in China, the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins played a sleepy preseason game on Sunday featuring mostly prospects. In fact, the Capitals sent only five players that could be considered regulars from last season.
The result was the Capitals ended up having the most demure of alternate captains.
Andre Burakovsky, for what I can only assume is a career first, wore an A on his jersey along with Brett Connolly and Christian Djoos. No one wore the captain’s C out of respect to Alex Ovechkin (who ironically was at the Redskins game).
The three Caps have a combined 661 games of experience in the NHL.
Former Capital Troy Brouwer has been named an alternate captain for the Calgary Flames. Mark Giordano will remain the Flames’ captain for his fourth straight season while Sean Monahan will serve as the other alternate.
