The New York Rangers’ Hometown Remix jerseys have a pretty unconventional way to identify who’s in charge.

Thursday, the Rangers debuted their new navy-and-silver sweaters in front of their home fans at at Madison Square Garden. And instead of J.T. Miller sporting a “C” or alternates Adam Fox, and Mika Zibanejad rocking an “A”, the players wore FDNY and NYPD inspired badges.

The small red nameplates, highlighted by a large silver border, are tucked under the Rangers’ vintage Lady Liberty logo on the left chest. Miller’s insignia reads “CAPTAIN” while Fox and Zibeanjad’s say “ASSISTANT.”

According to Fanatics, the patch was inspired by civic service badges and is intended to honor New York’s first responders, whose heroism during the September 11 attacks became an enduring symbol of the city.

It’s a small detail, but one that makes New York’s new sweater stand out from the rest of the NHL’s 32-team Hometown Remix collection.

Technically, under Rule 6.1 of the NHL’s 2026–27 rulebook (page 18), captains are required to wear a contrasting “C,” approximately three inches tall, on the front of their jerseys. Rule 6.2 establishes a similar requirement for alternate captains, who typically wear an “A.”

This isn’t the first time New York has experimented with the appearance of its captaincy letters. During the 2018 Winter Classic, the Rangers incorporated the “C” and “A” into a specially designed shield patch on the front of their jerseys. Those designs, however, still featured the traditional letters.

While the captaincy patches might be the most creative and unorthodox design solution on their Hometown Remix jerseys, the Rangers’ new sweaters feature several other notable details that pay homage to the Big Apple.

The crest is inspired by the jerseys the team wore for its first home game following the September 11 attacks, with “NEW YORK” spaced out in a stairstep design. The silver accents reference the metalwork of the city’s skyscrapers, while the red sleeve stripes feature a textured pattern inspired by the base of the Statue of Liberty’s torch.

The Rangers won their first game in the Hometown Remix sweaters defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2.

They’ll wear them four more times during the 2026–27 season, including a March 21 matchup against the Washington Capitals.
