After shutting out the Senators in Ottawa a week ago, the Washington Capitals returned to the Canadian capital city to take two more points from the red clad Sens. It was a night of firsts for Caps defensemen, and the team got another stellar performance from Pheonix Copley in the cage.
Tom Wilson got the party started with his eleventh goal of the season. Tyler Lewington kept it going with his first career NHL goal. Madison Bowey joined the night of firsts with his first marker in the bigs, but Colin White got the Sens on the board moments later.
Mark Stone made it a one-goal game late in the third, but the Caps held on to win.
Caps beat Senators 3-2!
- The Canadian national anthem is elite.
- Hello, the Senators are very, very bad and the first period was indication of that. The Caps basically walked through the first period and came out on the other side with a two goal lead. Poor, poor rookie netminder in red.
- Tom Wilson was the first on the board in this Saturday night soirée. The burly winger easily slammed home a bullet pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov to further shoot him up the goal scoring rankings among his teammates.
- In only his second NHL game, Tyler Lewington both secured the secondary assist on Wilson’s goal and then minutes later potted one in the Sens’ net for himself. Getting your first NHL point and goal in quick succession like that must be some kind of rush. Congrats, Tyler!

- Guy Boucher looks like the guy in the superhero show that they frame as the villain, but then he’s actually a good guy and he dies saving the hero at the end of the season.
- Remember when I said the Caps “walked through the first” and I meant it in a good way? Well, the Caps “walked through” the second and I now mean it in a bad way. The Senators controlled scoring chances in the second period 18 to 7. Pheonix Copley was the player of the period and man is he ever finding a groove.
- As said in the open, Madison Bowey joined Lewington in the first career goal night in Ottawa. Bowey then dropped the mitts with Brady Tkachuk and Lewington switched things up by joining Bowey in the first career NHL fight night in Ottawa. The fight with Ottawa’s Zack Smith gave Lewington a Gordie Howe hat trick and made him the first player to score his first goal and net said specialty hat trick in the same game since Steve Pinizzotto did it with the Edmonton Oilers in 2014.
- John Carlson and Michal Kempny did not have a good night. They basically set up camp in their own zone. Need a lot better from the Caps only remaining intact defensive pairing, especially against such a poor hockey team. Lets get into specifics tomorrow in the numbers post, barring me forgetting to do so.
- Alex Ovechkin hasn’t scored in five games and to be frank, he really hasn’t come close. We want 30, Ovi and we want it now.
Congratulations to Washington Capitals defenceman Tyler Lewington on becoming the 69th player from the 2013 NHL Entry Draft to score their first career goal!

- I asked Twitter for their favorite obscure Caps players from those not very good 2000s-ish years. I will do the same here. Gimme your best.
- Third period was also bad from a Caps perspective. Copley, great again. Everyone else, not so much.
