Ottawa Senators fans, put down the matches. Use your bonfires for s’mores. Save that expensive gasoline for your cars, and drive them to Canadian Tire Centre to get some worth out of your now worthless Brady Tkachuk jerseys.
In what the team is terming a “Chuk out the old jersey” promotion, the Senators are allowing disgruntled fans to exchange their officially licensed Fanatics Brady Tkachuk Senators sweaters for a 40 percent discount on their next jersey or any regularly priced merch at their team store, Ottawa Team Threads. The promotion is running from July 3 through 8.
The event should be popular, though there may be some hurdles. Many fans pointed out in the promotion’s comments that they have Adidas jerseys, while the post specifies Fanatics. It is unclear whether those older sweaters will be accepted, which may only further add to fans’ frustration. Some clever Sens’ supporters are also abandoning the promotion altogether, opting for a more DIY solution.

Tkachuk is enemy number one in Ottawa right now after waiving his no-move clause to be traded to the Florida Panthers in June. The former captain opted to join his brother in Sunrise after spending all eight years of his NHL career with the Senators. Bruce Garrioch added that Brady had been telling Senators teammates he wouldn’t re-sign four years ago.
This isn’t the first time a NHL team has hosted a jersey trade-in event. The Utah Mammoth, who sit next door to Nevada, offered fans of the newest franchise to trade in Vegas Golden Knights jerseys for a free Mammoth replacement on April 24.
Almost 1,000 people participated, gladly swapping to the newest expansion team and rival and cleaning out the stock. Utah hosted the event ahead of Game 3 of their playoff series, hoping to win over fans in the regional battle.
While the Senators’ trade-in may help vibes, there will probably still be plenty of Senators’ Tkachuk jerseys left to burn, stomp, and otherwise deface when Brady finds himself back in town for the first time with his new team. Tkachuk can probably expect the treatment Tavares received from New York Islanders’ die hards from the Ottawa fans who don’t utilize the deal.
The Senators even alluded to the likely fate of many of the jerseys in the graphic promoting their damage-minimizing attempt — flame details surround the jerseys and the text.
