Alex Ovechkin will get a chance to share the ice with his oldest son, Sergei Ovechkin, once again this summer.
The Washington Capitals captain is set to suit up alongside 7-year-old Sergei during the Ovi Cup gala match at Moscow’s V. V. Shalimov Arena-Mytishchi, with the dynamic father-son duo officially placed on the same roster for the exhibition that caps off Ovechkin’s annual youth tournament. The event is scheduled for August 8 and will once again feature a star-studded lineup featuring current and former NHL and KHL players.
Sergei has played in three prior Ovi Cup gala matches, assisting on one of his dad’s goals in 2023, skating on a line with his dad and Evgeni Malkin in 2024, and scoring four goals of his own in last year’s game.
In this year’s game, Ovechkin will lead one team, while his former Capitals teammate Ilya Kovalchuk will lead the other. The two teams will be coached by a group that includes Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Yakushev, Vladimir Myshkin, Alexei Kasatonov, Viktor Shalimov, Daniil Markov, and Denis Nikiforov.
Malkin getting a spot as a coach comes after Ovechkin said last March he would agree to be an assistant coach if Malkin were ever hired as a head coach someday.
Split among Ovechkin and Kovalchuk’s teams are a host of current and former Russian NHL players, as well as athletes from other sporting disciplines. The game comes just a couple of weeks after many of them also played in the annual “Match of the Year” charity game in Saint Petersburg.
The current NHL talent involved includes Ovechkin, Dmitry Orlov, and Artemi Panarin.
