Alex Ovechkin among the many local sports legends who attend Washington Commanders sold out home opener

The Washington Commanders had an ownership change over the offseason, finally cutting ties with longtime problematic figurehead Dan Snyder. With new owners Josh Harris, Magic Johnson, and Mark Ein at the helm, the Commanders had an excitement and buzz at FedEx Field for the team’s home opener against the Arizona Cardinals that had long been missing over the last decade-plus.

That energy and optimism was felt early by the sold-out crowd with how deafening it was. It also showed in the sports celebrities that attended the game.

The Washington Capitals were well represented at the football team’s season opener in Landover, MD. Caps captain Alex Ovechkin and his family were in the house along and the team’s Russian prospects — Alex Alexeyev and Ivan Miroshnichenko. The American football game appears to be the first for Miroshnichenko.

Four-year-old Ovi Jr assists on Alex Ovechkin goal in Ovechkin Cup friendly

Alex Ovechkin made it known that he planned on playing for the “Hockey Legends” team on the final day of this year’s Ovechkin Cup tournament. What we didn’t know was that his son Sergei would be joining him. And, the dynamic father and son duo did not disappoint on Saturday.

In typical Ovechkin form, the pair combined for four of their team’s 10 goals in a win against a team of hockey bloggers. Ovi Jr even came up with the primary assist on one of his dad’s tallies.

Ovi Jr. already has a rookie card

Sergei Ovechkin made a memorable cameo at the NHL’s 2023 All-Star Weekend. The four-year-old took center stage at the event’s media day and was on the ice for warmups ahead of the All-Star Skills Competition. Ovi Jr. was also a surprise participant in the Breakaway Challenge, winning the event with dad and Sidney Crosby on his wings.

The night was a special one for the family. Now, Ovi Jr. has been immortalized in an Upper Deck trading card. Sergei’s mom Nastya showed off the card on her Instagram story.

Tatyana Ovechkina watches grandson Sergei skate at Capitals practice facility

Sergei Ovechkin had a two-time Olympic gold medalist watching him practice his skating at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Thursday. Tatyana Ovechkina was in attendance to see her grandson get some work in.

The Ovechkin family including Sergei’s dad Alex and mom Nastya all made the trip to the Caps’ practice facility.

Capitals warn Florida Panthers not to try and draft Sergei Ovechkin early like they did with Alex Ovechkin

The Washington Capitals’ best tweet of the All-Star Skills Competition did not get much attention, but its nuance and context made it an all-timer.

Shortly after Sergei Ovechkin combined with Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby to win the Breakaway Challenge at FLA Live Arena, the Capitals told the Florida Panthers, “just letting you know #OviJr isn’t draft-eligible yet 😉.”

Ted Leonsis proposes a new line for the Capitals: Alex Ovechkin – Nicklas Backstrom – Sergei Ovechkin

The day after Sergei Ovechkin won the Breakaway Challenge at the 2023 NHL All-Star Skills Competition, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is getting ideas. And by ideas, we mean, ways to make the Caps a gr8 team for decades to come.

On Twitter, a proud Leonsis said of Sergei’s accomplishment, “What a great night at the #NHLAllStar Skills Competition,” he wrote. “I think Ovi Jr is ready! Alex on the left, Sergei on the right, Nick in the middle!”

Alex Ovechkin reviews Ovi Jr’s performance in breakaway challenge: ‘I thought he was just going to take a slap shot. He’s learning.’

Alex Ovechkin had a very fun day at the 2023 NHL All-Star Skills Competition as he got to take in all the action with his four-year-old son Sergei. The dynamic duo’s biggest moment of the night came during the Breakaway Challenge where they teamed up with Sidney Crosby and put up a perfect 40 score to win the whole thing.

Ovi was asked about the special day afterward and commented on just how much fun Sergei had and the shot that won them their challenge.

Sergei Ovechkin steals the show in Breakaway Challenge attempt with Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby

Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby were announced to be a dual entrant in the All-Star Skills Competition’s Breakaway Challenge.

But it was all a ruse to let Ovi’s four-year-old son Sergei steal the show.

After an elaborate setup at center ice with PK Subban, Ovechkin and Crosby signed the defenseman’s jersey before the former Norris Trophy winner asked one other legend for his ink: Sergei.

Ovi Jr. ambled out and then they all went in on Roberto Luongo alone on a three-on-none breakaway.
