Sonny Milano has officially signed with SC Bern of Switzerland’s National League for the 2026-27 season.
The 29-year-old winger is currently with the AHL’s Hershey Bears and was set to become an unrestricted free agent in July. He spent most of the 2025-26 regular season with the Washington Capitals, recording eight points (4g, 4a) in 31 games.
Milano’s deal with SC Bern was originally reported by Swiss outlet Watson earlier this month.
“We have signed Sonny Milano until the end of the season 2026/27,” the club’s announcement reads, as translated by Google Translate. “The 29-year-old American is moving from the Washington Capitals organization to Bern.”
Milano originally signed a one-year contract at the league minimum salary ($750k) with the Capitals in 2022. After posting 33 points (11g, 22a) in 64 games that season, he earned himself a three-year, $5.7 million extension, which has had him at a $1.9 million cap hit the past three seasons.
The former first-round pick has spent his entire professional career in North America, playing 344 NHL games with the Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, and Columbus Blue Jackets. SC Bern already has a few of Milano’s past teammates on their roster, including former Blue Jackets forward Emil Bemstrom and former Capitals Hardy Häman Aktell and Michael Sgarbossa.
Milano and the Bears are set to begin their second-round playoff series against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Thursday night. Through two postseason games this year, Milano has scored one goal.
