Tom Wilson, a purveyor of violence of the horrific kind, scores overtime game-winning goal against Rangers at Madison Square Garden

Tom Wilson was the hero in the Washington Capitals’ 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday.

After Alex Ovechkin tied it up 2-2 in the third period with his 885th career goal, Wilson scored the game-winner in overtime, redirecting a sensational pass by Dylan Strome as he drove down the right side and silencing the Madison Square Garden crowd.

A celebrating Wilson tripped over Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who was desperately trying to make the save, and then lay in the crease with his arms outstretched, looking like a toddler who just did something very impressive on the monkey bars before falling off.

Wilson’s 28th goal of the season, which extended his single-season career high, capped another Capitals comeback after the team gave up consecutive goals to the Rangers in the first and second periods and fell behind 2-1.

The moment was as electric as the context that preceded it.

Wilson, who participated in an animated chirp fest with Matt Rempe in the second period, was spotted by TNT cameras during the third with a splatter of dried blood near his collar. Who the blood came from or how it ended up on Wilson’s sweater was unclear, but the suggestion of violence worn on Wilson’s chest brought back memories of how the Capitals right wing arguably singlehandedly changed the trajectory of the Rangers’ franchise after physically dominating them in a single shift nearly four years ago.

During a line brawl on May 3, 2021, Wilson beat up Pavel Buchenevich and then slammed Artemi Panarin to the ice after the Russian star jumped on his back.

Panarin suffered a season-ending injury during the fracas, infuriating the Rangers. Once Wilson was ushered away to the penalty box the dominance continued, but in insults and intimidation. The Capitals enforcer stood up and made a pose in the penalty box, mocking the Rangers as if they were fake tough guys. Wilson was awarded 14 minutes in penalties, including a misconduct.

The Capitals posted the following image on social media, which they deleted shortly after.

The Rangers expected the NHL to suspend Wilson after the game, but the Department of Player Safety opted only for a fine, giving the hockey world one of the most dramatic and over-the-top press releases in the history of sports.

In all caps, the Rangers wrote that they “ARE EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED THAT CAPITALS FORWARD TOM WILSON WAS NOT SUSPENDED FOR HIS HORRIFYING ACT OF VIOLENCE LAST NIGHT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. WILSON IS A REPEAT OFFENDER WITH A LONG HISTORY OF THESE TYPE OF ACTS AND WE FIND IT SHOCKING THAT THE NHL AND THEIR DEPARTMENT OF PLAYER SAFETY FAILED TO TAKE THE APPROPRIATE ACTION AND SUSPEND HIM INDEFINITELY.”

They added that Wilson was “DANGEROUS AND RECKLESS” and that George Parros is “UNFIT TO CONTINUE HIS CURRENT ROLE.” It was, in their opinion, “A DERELICTION OF DUTY.”

Wilson returned to MSG a day later to face the Rangers in their last matchup of the season, recording a fight and another misconduct in a chaos-fueled game that featured a line brawl at the opening faceoff and a total of 141 penalty minutes between the two teams.

New York cleaned house after the season, firing president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton. A week later they dismissed head coach David Quinn and assistant coaches David Oliver, Jacques Martin, and Greg Brown.

The Rangers then arguably went overboard acquiring toughness over the offseason, trading for Ryan Reaves (who went on to never actually fight Wilson as a member of the Rangers) and signing Patrick Nemeth, Jarred Tinordi, Dryden Hunt, Gregg McKegg, and Barclay Goodrow.

Years later, Wilson still looks forward to a fiery game when the Capitals and Rangers face off.

“I think the rivalry over the years has been kind of second to none,” Wilson said postgame Wednesday. “It’s a fun building to come into. It doesn’t take much to get the emotions going. They had a great push. They started playing physical and I thought our answer was good. We had great pushback, Dewey and Roysie stepping up. It was a fun hockey game. I think both teams battled really hard. It was entertaining, a little bit everything, some rough stuff, and always a fun building to come into and get a win.”

Wilson finished Wednesday’s game with two points (1g, 1a), four hits, and three shots. The right wing is on pace for 65 points (37g, 28a) and a career year, establishing himself as one of the very best forwards in the NHL.

While the Rangers got a standings point for the overtime loss, Wilson’s overtime winner dropped them out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference — a spot they had clawed themselves back into after winning 7 of their last 10.

The Capitals are 3-0 against former head coach Peter Laviolette this season, a year after New York swept them out of the first round of the playoffs.
