Alex Ovechkin scores 885th career goal on Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin, 10 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s goals record

Alex Ovechkin 885th goal

Alex Ovechkin is 10 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goals record after scoring in the third period against the New York Rangers.

While on a power play, Ovechkin hustled to a loose puck at the far post and beat Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin short side. Ovi’s 321st career power-play tally tied the game 2-2.

The tally was Ovechkin’s 885th career goal and his 32nd in 46 games played in the 2024-25 season.

The goal came after Connor McMichael lost a faceoff. The Capitals’ 2019 first-round pick gathered in a loose puck at the side boards and sent a no-look pass to the crease where Andrew Mangipane was lurking. Mangiapane lost control of the puck, but Ovechkin made no mistake when he got his blade on it.

Fans at Madison Square Garden chanted “Ovi” after he scored.

Ovechkin is now on track to tie Gretzky’s record of 894 on April 2 at Carolina and break it on April 4 vs Chicago.

The tally marked Ovi’s 1,599th career point, putting him one away from becoming the 11th player all time to register 1,600 points.

The 39-year-old Russian sniper has 9 goals in his last 10 games.

The tally comes on the same day the Capitals announced Ovechkin would donate money to pediatric cancer research after every goal he scores moving forward.
