ARLINGTON, VA — Goaltender Clay Stevenson is back in Washington and with a brand new bucket.
Stevenson took part in the Capitals’ informal skate on Saturday morning, hitting the ice with a new mask design featuring several landmarks from around DC.
The mask features the Capitol Dome on both sides, overlaid by the Capitals’ primary logo and Stevenson’s no. 33. Another historic Washington site sits over each ear: Stevenson’s left side features the White House, while his right shows the Abraham Lincoln statue from the Lincoln Memorial. The top half of the mask features the head of the Caps’ Weagle logo surrounded by stars on a red background.
Stevenson wasn’t the only Capitals goaltender to take inspiration from the city’s architecture, with offseason acquisition Logan Thompson’s mask design similarly incorporating both the Capitol building and Lincoln’s statue.
The new helmet appears to bear the signature of Dave Gunnarsson, who has previously worked with Stevenson on both Capitals and Hershey Bears-themed masks. Gunnarsson has also created masks for Charlie Lindgren, including a fresh design for the 2024-25 season.
Stevenson will likely start the season as the Hershey Bears’ backup goaltender after a strong season from both him and partner Hunter Shepard in 2023-24. Stevenson ended his rookie season in the AHL with a 24-10-2 record, 2.06 goals-against average, and a .922 save percentage, leading the league with seven shutouts.
The Capitals will kick off on-ice activities at training camp on September 19, with their first preseason game against the Philadelphia Flyers coming on September 22.
