The Washington Capitals have acquired forward Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a second-round draft selection in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The Capitals made the move official shortly after 8 pm on Thursday night.

Mangiapane recorded 40 points (14g, 26a) in 75 games for the Flames last season. He has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $5.8 million. He also holds a modified no-trade clause that allows him an 8-team, no-trade list.

The Flames originally drafted the 28-year-old winger in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft. Mangiapane has spent parts of the last seven seasons with Calgary, posting his best individual stats during the 2021-22 campaign when he amassed 55 points (35g, 20a) in 82 games.

Mangiapane also starred for Team Canada at two World Championships (2021, 2024), earning a goal medal and tournament MVP honors in 2021. He had 11 points (7g, 4a) in seven games.

Washington obtained the second-round pick involved in the deal from the Colorado Avalanche when they dealt Lars Eller at the 2023 trade deadline. The Capitals still hold their own second-round pick and Boston’s second-round pick in the 2025 draft.

Depending on how Mangiapane performs and how the Capitals perform as a team, he could be a prime candidate to get flipped at the 2025 trade deadline. Washington would be able to retain salary on him without hesitation as he’s due for unrestricted free agency next offseason.
