This is your place to check for updates and comment along with the Washington Capitals vs. Chicago Blackhawks game on March 23, 2023.
The Washington Capitals are back in action after (embarrassingly) falling to the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-6 (and making my son cry all the way back to the metro).
The Caps will get John Carlson back in the lineup for the first time since December 23 – though it’s debatable if that’s a good thing for the team in the moment.
Tonight’s game is on NBC Sports Washington. Puck drop is a little after 7 pm. It’s Women In Hockey Night.

1st Period
Milano-Backstrom-Oshie and Fehervary-Carlson get the start. Darcy Kuemper is in net against Anton Khubodbin.
🚨 1-0 Capitals. Khudobin passes the puck directly to Conor Sheary for one of the easiest goals of his career.
🚨 2-0 Capitals. Anthony Mantha scores after Alex Ovechkin mishandles a set play off a faceoff win. That’s now seven goals in five career games for Mantha against Khudobin.
Chicago outshot the Capitals 10-8. 5v5 shot attempts were 14-14. The Blackhawks led in expected goals, 0.99 to 0.87.
2nd Period
🚨 3-0 Capitals. Nic Dowd scores his 13th goal of the season after being left unguarded down the seam. Great pass by Aliaksei Protas.
🚨 4-0 Capitals. Nicklas Backstrom scores on the power play in front of the net.
Chicago isn’t playing much worse than the Caps, they’re just getting terrible goaltending.
3rd Period
🚨 5-0 Capitals. John Carlson picks his own number and scores on the power play. His first goal since 2022.
🚨 5-1 Capitals. Darcy Kuemper gets beat by a long point shot to end his shutout bid. Nikita Zaitsev gets credit for the goal.
🚨 6-1 Capitals. Alex Ovechkin scores career goal no. 821 on the breakaway.
