Barry Trotz’s New York Islanders just got swept by the Carolina Hurricanes

The storm surge continues, this time swallowing the whole of Long Island. The Carolina Hurricanes have completed a second-round sweep of the New York Islanders, ousting Barry Trotz‘s beloved Brooklyn boys with four straight victories.

With a 5-2 thrashing on home ice, the Canes sealed the deal on Friday night. Sebastian Aho scored on the game’s first shot.

Vezina finalist goalie Robin Lehner was eventually chased from the net.

Thought New York’s team defense was greatly improved from last season, Carolina seemed to run roughshod over them in the series, dominating the flow of five-on-five play and more than doubling them up in total goals.

You hate to see it.

The Canes have yet to lose a game on home ice.  They will next face the winner of the Columbus-Boston series.

Meanwhile, the Islanders, who eliminated the Penguins in a first-round sweep, have now themselves been swept. Barry Trotz’s new team ultimately recorded one more playoff win than his former team. Tough break for him and also for Ian Oland, who will need a new bandwagon to jump on.
