Saturday night at Capital One Arena was the Capitals’ final regular season game and Fan Appreciation Night. While the game’s result was less than ideal, a few fans got to take home a consolation prize through the team’s annual “Jersey Off Our Backs” ceremony.
One of those lucky Caps fans was Sterling Strange, who was nominated as a Capitals Community Leader. Sterling regularly donates his VIP season tickets to local kids who are battling life-threatening diseases.
Sterling wore a shirt that summed up the Capitals’ ultimate goal for the season: Not Suck Back-to-Back.
In-game host Adam Kelsey noticed Sterling’s shirt and pointed it out to the crowd.
“Walking over to Sterling right now, we’ve got some ‘back-to-backs,’ that’s what we’re hoping for starting next week,” Kelsey said. The Capitals will face off against the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs.
Sterling opened his envelope to reveal which player’s jersey he would be receiving. It was #3, Nick Jensen.
Jensen pulled off his game-worn jersey and knelt to sign it for Sterling.
Want to be like Sterling and rock the “Not Suck Back 2 Back” shirt? We’ve got you covered.
Here are some of the other photos from the Jerseys Off Our Backs ceremony, mostly from the view of the bench as players patiently waited for their names to be drawn. (Unlike previous seasons, Evgeny Kuznetsov did not beat up Slapshot while he waited.)
