Alex Ovechkin’s new motto for the 2018-19 season: ‘Not suck back-to-back’

During the first day of last season’s Training Camp, captain Alex Ovechkin declared the Capitals were “not going to be suck this year.”

The Capitals went on, in unlikely fashion, to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in team history. During the team’s championship parade, Ovechkin celebrated in a speech. “I say we’re not going to be f$%*ing suck this year,” he said. “We’re the Stanley Cup Champions.”

So on Friday, the media asked Ovechkin if he had a new motto for this season.

The full exchange is as follows.

A year ago, you said on this very day “we’re not going to be suck”

[Alex Ovechkin snorts]

What’s the message this year?

Alex Ovechkin: “Not suck back-to-back.”

[laughter]

Later, in a one-on-one interview with ABC 7’s Scott Abraham, Ovi gave the “not suck” line slightly more panache.

Scott Abraham: This day last year you had the most famous quote of all. You said “not gonna suck this year.” What’s the message this year?

Alex Ovechkin: Back-to-back we not going to be suck.

Scott Abraham: We need to put that on a t-shirt right now. What do you think? Are you gonna buy that t-shirt?

Alex Ovechkin: I’m going to get it for free.

Yes, Ovi, we’ll have one for you shortly.

P.S. – The last team to “not be suck” back-to-back? The 2015-16 and 2016-17 Pittsburgh Penguins.
