For many dedicated fans, the Washington Capitals’ Stanley Cup season was one of the best moments of their lives. For Kate A., that year was so epic it inspired her senior quote.
Kate chose Alex Ovechkin’s “not going to be suck” mantra to fall under her senior photo in Battlefield High School’s 2019 yearbook.
Kate’s mom Brooke sent us the picture on Twitter.
On the first day of training camp before the 2017-18 season, Alex Ovechkin uttered a phrase that would ultimately prove prophetic for the season. Seeking to quell doubts about the quality of the Capitals squad after the loss of several players, Ovechkin told the media, “We’re not going to be suck this year.”
Ovechkin would eventually repeat those words nine months later from the podium at the Capitals Stanley Cup Championship Parade.
Since then, Ovechkin’s catchphrase has spawned t-shirts, a beanie, and even a Jeep. Now, Ovechkin’s “Not Going to Be Suck” catchphrase has been adopted by a local church.

The Washington Capitals spent Wednesday afternoon in Toronto taking in some hockey history with a tour of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Resource Centre before donating a Capitals Stanley Cup ring to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Players had the opportunity to check out a massive vault of game-used sticks, game footage, and jerseys stored at the D.K. (Doc) Seaman Hockey Resource Centre. Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin got the chance to check out the sticks used by hockey legends like Wayne Gretzky and Maurice “Rocket” Richard.
But one hockey artifact caught our eye, and from the looks of it, Ovi’s too!

A Caps-decorated Jeep is becoming a familiar sight for fans leaving Capital One Arena after home games.
Often parked across the street from the arena on F St, the white Jeep is covered in Capitals logos and decked out with flags. The front windshield reads “Holtbeast” and the back windshield reads “Back to back.”
But most striking of all is the massive six-foot replica of the Stanley Cup that is strapped to the top of the car with Alex Ovechkin‘s face on the Cup’s base, along with the slogan he gave the Caps at the start of the 2017-18 season: “We’re not going to be suck this year!”

One year ago, Alex Ovechkin spoke to media on the first day of the 2017 training camp. He gave the team a slogan that defined their entire season: “We’re not going to be suck this year.”
Today, Ovechkin was asked what his new motto would be. “Not suck back-to-back,” he quipped.
Of course we made it into a t-shirt.

The Capitals went on, in unlikely fashion, to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in team history. During the team’s championship parade, Ovechkin celebrated in a speech. “I say we’re not going to be f$%*ing suck this year,” he said. “We’re the Stanley Cup Champions.”
So on Friday, the media asked Ovechkin if he had a new motto for this season.

Washington Capitals captain and three-time NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin has a new favorite shirt and — oh my god — it’s ours.
Tuesday night after the Capitals defeated the Colorado Avalanche 5-2, Ovechkin threw on RMNB’s We’re Not Going To Be Suck This Year tee, a design Cara Bahniuk made earlier in the season honoring Ovi’s aspirational preseason quote.
Despite suffering one of their worst losses of the season Thursday night, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is doubling down on a promise he made on the first day of training camp.
After a difficult offseason that saw many of the team’s veteran players leave, the famed goalscorer said “We’re not going to be suck this year.”
Well, we made that quote into a shirt. And today Ovechkin reached into his wardrobe and put it on.
Friday afternoon during the first day of training camp, Alex Ovechkin gave us a slogan we can all get behind.
When asked about his thoughts on how the team would perform this season, Ovechkin responded, “we’re not gonna be suck this year.”
We turned it into a t-shirt.
