For many dedicated fans, the Washington Capitals’ Stanley Cup season was one of the best moments of their lives. For Kate A., that year was so epic it inspired her senior quote.
Kate chose Alex Ovechkin’s “not going to be suck” mantra to fall under her senior photo in Battlefield High School’s 2019 yearbook.
Kate’s mom Brooke sent us the picture on Twitter.

The “not going to be suck” quote was first uttered by Ovechkin at training camp ahead of the 2017-18 season. Ovechkin said it in response to the media asking how good the Capitals would be after losing several important players due to free agency. Ovechkin would wear shirts inspired by the line. Later, after the Capitals won it all, Ovechkin ended his victory speech at the national mall by saying the quote again, but with one extra word for emphasis.
Brooke wrote this to us in an email:
She picked this quote because she’s a die-hard Caps fan and she was determined that her senior year would not be suck! The Caps being World Champs during her senior year made a memorable year even more so. Some of her best memories have been the Pens series ender, Game 5 in LV, riding to Dicks at midnight with the top off the Jeep laying on the horn the whole way, and the Championship parade, banner raising. There was no doubt that she would be choosing a Caps quote and I think the one she picked was pitch perfect!
Kate, congratulations on your upcoming graduation!
