Since being dealt by the Capitals at the 2016 trade deadline, Brooks Laich has maintained ties with at least one Caps player on social media: Alex Ovechkin. It’s mostly come in the form of chirping.
For instance, Laich went live on Instagram Monday night and was hit up by a very eager commenter.
As the former Capital answered health and fitness questions from his followers, Ovechkin suddenly appeared in the chat. “terrrrrry,” Ovechkin wrote.
Brooks saw it, laughed, and said “Terry! I see you Terry!”
Brooks kept answering his fans’ questions, but even after getting a coveted shoutout, the Russian machine continued to comment “terrrrrry.”
It appears Ovechkin also began typing in Laich’s hometown province too, Saskatchewan. Except he spelled it really wrong.
“scashwain!!” Ovechkin wrote.
Eventually, Ovechkin got to the real reason he arrived. “i wanna talk to you here,” he said.
Brooks responded, “Ok! How do i–” and then the screen cut out.
A few minutes later, Brooks popped back up and said “Oh, I lost you there. Sorry, guys, I was talking to a friend of mine. Ovi, are you there?”
Ovi messages “nooooo” and that’s how it ended.
Capitals fans were very excited in the moment of a potential Laich-Ovechkin Instagram Live chat.

Unfortunately, it did not work out.
Without hockey, Laich has become an Instagram regular despite once saying in 2015 that “I’m not that interested in that sort of thing” and struggling to follow his line-mates, Tom Wilson and Michael Latta.
Meanwhile, the name Terry is a Capitals inside joke and likely a reference to a Key and Peele sketch.
