The Capitals made one more stop in the state of Pennsylvania to play the Philadelphia Flyers. If this game did anything, it only heightened my hatred for the color orange.
A couple goals for the good guys in the first period to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. Tip of the hat to the goal scorers Brett Connolly and Lars Eller.
Second period started with a quick response from James van Riemsdyk to get the Flyers on the board. The Capitals snagged two more goals, an unassisted one from Brett Connolly and one that got Tom Wilson inducted into the 20 goal club. The final goal of the high scoring period went to Scott Laughton. Caps continued to lead 4-2.
The third period happened and the Capitals made a bunch of unnecessary penalties, especially toward the end. They got lucky with their kills. A final empty netter from your friendly neighborhood pal Evgeny Kuznetsov sealed the deal.
Caps beat Flyers 5-2.
- Quick, let’s start with some scoring news not from this game. Madison Bowey scored his first goal as a Detroit Red Wing!
- Don’t tell this Flyers fan’s mother…but his favorite player is Braden Holtby. I just wanted to reach through the screen and tell him “It’s ok, you can come to our side! We’re fun, I promise!”
- This was Brett Connolly‘s second two-goal game of season, first since February 9th. He now has 19 goals, a career high and he’s just one point shy of reaching 40 points, for the first time in his career.
- We got the chance to see Lars Eller continue to heat up. In the second period, he registered his third goal in his last four games. *insert gif of very intimidating tiger*
- Something pretty cool for our Czech fans in the audience tonight. Michal Kempny had an assist on Connolly’s goal. No Czech-born defenseman has more goals, assists or points than Kempny (6g, 18a) this season.
- Who else is heating up this evening? It’s John Carlson after he got an assist on the Brett Connolly goal. This is Carlson’s fifth straight game with a point. He’s three assists shy of setting a new career high for assists in a season (2017-18: 53a).
- Tom Wilson, welcome to the 20 goal club. This is his first time reaching the milestone.
Only Nashville’s Viktor Arvidsson has at least 20 goals in fewer games than Wilson this season (Wilson: 20 goals in 52 games; Arvidsson: 28 goals in 47 games).

- There was also a very rude no call on Tom Wilson at the start of the game.
- Quick bullet in appreciation of the third line. Dominant as hell with three goals, none against, and they’re winning every shift. *chef kisses fingertips*
- At the other end of the ice, the Caps faced the fresh face of Carter Hart, the hopes and dreams of the Philadelphia franchise, who — oh, gave up four goals in addition to the three he gave up last game and the three in the game before that. This is obviously a Peter bullet.
- The Islanders and Penguins, second and third in the division respectively, are also active tonight. The Penguins crushed the Sabres, but the Isles/Habs game could go either way. The top of the Metro remains tight.
- The Caps made this game unnecessarily interesting with a glut of penalties in the third period: Evgeny Kuznetsov for tripping, Nick Backstrom for hooking, and Nick Jensen for interference.
- The Washington Capitals are now 3-0 against the Flyers this year. They’ll have the opportunity to completely sweep the Flyers this season on March 24th.
- Lookin’ fab in some brown/tan tones!

We’ll see you back here on Saturday. You might be gearing up for Saint Paddy’s Day festivities, but the Capitals will be traveling to battle the Tampa Bay Lightning. Hoping to see some good tans and some good goals (only from the Capitals though…)
