Former Capital Zach Fucale on playing with Alex Ovechkin: ‘I learned a lot from being around him’

Alex Ovechkin is one of the NHL’s greatest players. As he chases the record for most goals in league history, Ovechkin leaves another impact on his teammates around him. Former Capital Zach Fucale didn’t spend long playing behind the Great Eight, but the experience left an impact all the same.

Fucale, who served as the Hershey Bears’ backup goaltender during their Calder Cup run, signed with the KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk over the summer and made his KHL debut earlier this month.

He spoke on his time with Ovechkin during an interview with Russian outlet Metaratings.ru.

Zach Fucale records 31-save victory in KHL debut with Traktor Chelyabinsk

Zach Fucale didn’t take long to earn his first KHL win. The former Capitals goaltender made his regular-season debut with Traktor Chelyabinsk on Saturday, recording a 2-1 victory over Lada Tolgliatti to open the season.

Fucale already defeated Lada during the preseason, recording a shutout with former teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov watching from the stands to win the Chelyabinsk Governor’s Cup.

Zach Fucale consulted with Evgeny Kuznetsov before signing with Traktor, says Bears made right choice starting Hunter Shepard in playoffs

Zach Fucale left the Washington Capitals organization this summer, signing a one-year deal with the KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk. Fucale, who backed up Hunter Shepard during the the Hershey Bears’ Calder Cup championship run, will play in Russia for the first time in his professional career.

Before he made the decision to go overseas, Fucale consulted with several Capitals about playing hockey in the KHL, including Evgeny Kuznetsov, who was brought up through the Traktor system, Aliaksei Protas, and Bogdan Trineyev.

Fucale arrived in Russia earlier this week. He recently spoke about the move with Sport-Express’ Mikhail Zislis.

Behind the scenes of the Hershey Bears’ 2023 Calder Cup championship celebration at Giant Center

HERSHEY, PA — The Hershey Bears celebrated the franchise’s twelfth Calder Cup championship at Giant Center on Saturday afternoon. The event marked the first public event fans could attend since the Bears lifted the AHL’s championship trophy in Southern California early Thursday morning. Alternate captain and inventor of the ROAR, Mike Vecchione, scored on a rebound to in overtime of Game 7 to eliminate the first-year Coachella Valley Firebirds in thrilling fashion.

The championship ceremony began at 3 pm and was open to the public. There were so many Bears fans in attendance, many of the players, who had barely slept since winning the championship days before, stayed hours after they were scheduled to leave so no one left empty-handed.

Nothing about the celebration or the fan support felt minor league.

Zach Fucale to sign with KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk after Calder Cup Finals, says team’s general manager

Zach Fucale will be leaving the Washington Capitals organization after the Hershey Bears’ magical season ends.

Fucale, who is currently serving as a backup to AHL Playoff MVP candidate Hunter Shepard, is expected to sign a contract with the KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk per the team’s 43-year-old general manager Alexei Volkov.

Capitals send Zach Fucale and Gabriel Carlsson down to Hershey Bears

The Washington Capitals announced on Thursday afternoon that they have sent goaltender Zach Fucale and defenseman Gabriel Carlsson back to the Hershey Bears.

The moves come as both John Carlson and Darcy Kuemper are ready to make their respective returns from injury against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Capitals needed an open roster spot to be able to activate Carlson from long-term injured reserve.

Capitals recall goaltender Zach Fucale from Hershey after Darcy Kuemper leaves practice with injury

The Washington Capitals announced that they have recalled goaltender Zach Fucale from the Hershey Bears late in the afternoon on Saturday.

The news comes after regular number one netminder Darcy Kuemper left practice earlier in the day with an upper-body injury. The Caps are flying to Minnesota to take on the Wild in a Sunday matinee matchup.

Hershey Bears players answer: ‘Who’s the most famous person in your phone?’

The Washington Capitals are the 12th-worst team in the NHL and could take some figurative TNT to their roster over the next two weeks. So let’s turn our attention to one of the very best teams in the American Hockey League, the Hershey Bears, who may supply some players to the Capitals’ roster in the coming weeks.

The Bears were asked an interesting question from their social media team: Who is the most famous person in your phone, and do they pick up if you call them?

Some answered seriously and others joked around. The video is a good barometer of how many likable characters the team has.

Capitals return goaltenders Zach Fucale and Hunter Shepard to Hershey Bears

With the Washington Capitals’ injuries in goal, the Hershey Bears have been stretched thin at the position, too. Over a stretch of eight days, the Bears, the AHL’s best team, were forced to sign two emergency goaltenders and give three starts to rookie Clay Stevenson.

Now, a sense of normalcy will return to Hershey’s net as the Capitals sent Zach Fucale and Hunter Shepard back to the AHL. The veteran Fucale is in his third season with the Bears while Shepard was the AHL goaltender of the month in November.

The news means officially that Darcy Kuemper will return to the Capitals’ active roster tonight and backup Charlie Lindgren.

The Washington Capitals made a surprise call-up before puck drop against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Zach Fucale is headed to the big-league team from Hershey.

It’s unclear, at this moment, if Charlie Lindgren or Hunter Shepard are unable to play tonight.
