Magic Johnson meets Alex Ovechkin at Commanders game: ‘One of the greatest hockey goal scorers of all time’

Alex Ovechkin was one of over a dozen sports stars at the Washington Commanders’ electric home opener on Sunday. The Commanders sold out its game against the Arizona Cardinals — a thrilling 20-16 win.

The atmosphere at FedEx Field was more hopeful than it’s been in a long time as Dan Synder’s previous leadership soured the fanbase. Now, with Josh Harris’s ownership group in charge, there’s a different feeling. And part of that is because of the optimism that retired NBA superstar and part-owner, Magic Johnson, brings to the table.

Johnson has a four percent stake in the Commanders and has been a positive presence in DC over the last week, meeting with the team at their practice facility and presenting a check to a local Boys & Girls Club.

Alex Ovechkin among the many local sports legends who attend Washington Commanders sold out home opener

The Washington Commanders had an ownership change over the offseason, finally cutting ties with longtime problematic figurehead Dan Snyder. With new owners Josh Harris, Magic Johnson, and Mark Ein at the helm, the Commanders had an excitement and buzz at FedEx Field for the team’s home opener against the Arizona Cardinals that had long been missing over the last decade-plus.

That energy and optimism was felt early by the sold-out crowd with how deafening it was. It also showed in the sports celebrities that attended the game.

The Washington Capitals were well represented at the football team’s season opener in Landover, MD. Caps captain Alex Ovechkin and his family were in the house along and the team’s Russian prospects — Alex Alexeyev and Ivan Miroshnichenko. The American football game appears to be the first for Miroshnichenko.

Alex Ovechkin has grown to be a huge fan of American football. Not so much baseball.

With his return to DC this weekend, Alex Ovechkin is back in Washington just in time for the start of another sport’s season: American football. He spoke on his growing love of the game in a recent interview with Artem Batrak and Alexei Shevchenko of the Russian outlet It’s Hockey, Bro!, explaining how he developed into a fan.

In the interview, later transcribed by Sports.ru, Ovechkin explains how he wasn’t familiar with either football or baseball until starting his NHL career in Washington. He’s become a big fan of the Washington Commanders, but admitted he still doesn’t care much for American’s National Pastime.

Kevin Durant attends Washington Commanders training camp, chats with team president Jason Wright

The Washington Commanders have good vibes around them for the first time in what seems like forever after the NFL officially approved the sale of the team to a Josh Harris-led group a little over a week ago.

Those positive vibes have continued into training camp. The practices have been selling out despite the recent heat wave as fan reengagement increases and one big-time fan in particular was in attendance on Friday.

PG County native and future NBA Hall of Famer, Kevin Durant was on the sidelines at OrthoVirginia Training Center at Commanders Park.

NFL officially approves sale of Washington Commanders to Josh-Harris led group, fines Dan Snyder $60 million

The NFL has approved the sale of the Washington Commanders to a partnership group led by Josh Harris. In a special session on Thursday, the league’s owners voted unanimously to allow the purchase. The deal could close as early as Friday, per the Washington Post.

The Snyder family and the new Harris-led ownership group had entered into a formal agreement to sell the team in May. As well as voting to allow the sale, the NFL fined Dan Snyder $60 million following the league’s investigation into sexual and financial misconduct by Snyder and the Commanders.

Dan Snyder agrees to sell Washington Commanders to Josh Harris-led group

The Washington Commanders announced Friday that owners Dan and Tanya Snyder had entered into an agreement to sell the team to a partnership led by Josh Harris. The deal must now be approved by NFL owners and the league’s finance committee.

Harris, who originally hails from Maryland, currently owns the New Jersey Devils and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

It’s the largest transaction for a sports team in history.

Taylor Heinicke, a late-blooming Capitals and hockey fan, leaves DC after signing a two-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons. We say goodbye.

Taylor Heinicke signed a two-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on the second day of NFL free agency, Tuesday, officially ending the fan favorite’s time in DC. Heinicke’s contract will see him earn $20 million for his hometown team.

Tabbed as a backup, Heinicke ended up starting 24 games for the Washington Commanders over the past three seasons, stepping in to replace Dwayne Haskins, Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Carson Wentz either due to injury or poor play.

The Commanders opted not to bring Taylor back despite being a cult hero amongst fans.

Washington Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke rocks Capitals’ Reverse Retro jersey

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke showed his support in a national way to the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

Heinicke rocked the Capitals’ Reverse Retro 2.0 sweater and their recent giveaway Screagle hat on Colin Cowherd’s “The Herd Live.”

Heinicke, who replaced an injured Carson Wentz early in the season, has led the Commanders to a 5-1-1 over the last seven games and a possible playoff berth.

Alex Ovechkin attends Washington Commanders’ season opener with family, wears Kirk Cousins jersey

Alex Ovechkin returned to DC earlier this week and he’s already back supporting the local teams.

Sunday, Ovechkin, along with his wife Nastya and oldest son Sergei, attended the Washington Commanders-Jacksonville Jaguars game at FedEx Field. Ovechkin was joined by his close friends Pete Kalamoutsos (Club Glow and Echostage) and Abe Hamrah (Designo Motoring).

Ovechkin wore a number eight Kirk Cousins jersey and a Redskins hat.
