Alex Ovechkin was one of over a dozen sports stars at the Washington Commanders’ electric home opener on Sunday. The Commanders sold out its game against the Arizona Cardinals — a thrilling 20-16 win.
The atmosphere at FedEx Field was more hopeful than it’s been in a long time as Dan Synder’s previous leadership soured the fanbase. Now, with Josh Harris’s ownership group in charge, there’s a different feeling. And part of that is because of the optimism that retired NBA superstar and part-owner, Magic Johnson, brings to the table.
Johnson has a four percent stake in the Commanders and has been a positive presence in DC over the last week, meeting with the team at their practice facility and presenting a check to a local Boys & Girls Club.

“You don’t have to worry about no problems from this ownership group,” Johnson said he told Commanders’ players per ESPN. “You just have to concentrate on Sundays playing football. You ain’t going to read no headlines. You’re not going to have to worry about nothing. No questions from you guys about stuff off the field. Your job is just to concentrate on doing your job and having fun every Sunday, every Thursday or every Monday. That’s it.”
The five-time NBA champion, who is regarded as the greatest point guard to ever play, even made sure to be in Maryland for the home opener, flying over from the west coast to take in the game.

Johnson sat in the owner’s box with two NBA stars, Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid. He also made sure to take photos and meet with many of the special guests at the game, including Ovechkin.
“One of the greatest hockey goal scorers of all time,” Johnson said of Ovechkin on social media. In the picture, Johnson also poses with minority owner Mark Ein and Ovechkin’s son, Sergei.
Johnson also had kind shoutouts for former Commanders quarterback Doug Williams, DC Mayor Bowser, and team sponsors and partners.
While Michael Jordan is Ovechkin’s favorite basketball player ever, something tells me Magic might be second now.
