Philipp Grubauer’s said a heartfelt goodbye after his trade to the Colorado Avalanche this offseason.
But a new team means new gear for the former Capitals backup goalie.
Swedish airbrush artist Dave Gunnarsson delivered again with his Rocky Mountain themed helmet, which features “Grubi” on the chin and the Colorado “C” logo under the Rocky Mountains.

Tuesday night, former Capitals backup goalie Philipp Grubauer said his final goodbye to the district in an Instagram post.
“It’s time to say goodbye and thank you to the city I have called home for so many years. Thank you @capitals, all the boys, D.C, and all the fans. It’s been an incredible ride!” he said.

Over the last several weeks, Washington Capitals players have slowly made their way back to DC to start training for next season. Caps stars Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom, Braden Holtby, and John Carlson have skated daily at the team’s practice faculty in Arlington, Virginia along with younger players like Nathan Walker looking to gain an edge during training camp. The informal sessions, nicknamed Camp Nemo, are run by strength & conditioning coach Mark Nemish.
Without a full complimentary of players around, Nemish invited an 18-year-old, high school goalie, Max Cichanowicz, to join the team on the ice in August. The invite was advantageous for both sides. Nemish gained a full-time goalie; Max would try to make saves against some of the the greatest hockey players in the world, gaining valuable experience for next season.
It also didn’t hurt that Max is a huge Caps fan.
“Practicing with the Capitals was the time of my life and it really showed me that I could more than hang with the guys,” Max said in an interview with RMNB. “It has left me with all the confidence in the world. It has been an absolute dream come true to practice with the team that is essentially the reason why I play.”
Philipp Grubauer, who has been “remarkably chill” as both an elite back-up goalie and street hockey forward, tried to played a last game of pick-up street hockey in front of the White House before heading to Colorado.
The Secret Service, which was awaiting the vice president’s motorcade, shut the game down. So the goalie put on a street clinic for the kids instead.

Wednesday around 6:30 PM, Andrew Logan made his way over to Pennsylvania Avenue to try something new. The 30-year-old audio engineer was intrigued by hockey after watching the Washington Capitals become Stanley Cup champions in June. On this night, Andrew would try the sport and play a serious game of pickup hockey for the very first time.
“I’ve been a rollerblader since childhood, but have never really played,” Andrew said in an interview.
His timing was impeccable.
For much of the night, Andrew, who referred to himself as a “newb,” played goaltender due to his lack of seniority among the other players. But now he’ll have one heck of a story he can tell his friends. Andrew was scored on by former Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer – one of the guys he watched and rooted for on TV during the spring.
It was Grubi’s only goal of the night.
“For real,” Andrew said laughing.

Sunday, Capitals forward Nathan Walker hopped on a flight from Australia to the United States, presumably to start ramping up his training for next season.
When the Aussie arrives, several of his current and former Stanley Cup-winning teammates will already be around getting ready for training camp.
Monday evening around 5pm, John Carlson and Lars Eller as well as former backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer played three-on-three hockey. The players moved the goals to each wing of one zone.
Former Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer took the Stanley Cup his hometown of Rosenheim, Germany Monday. As any German is wont to do, Grubauer greeted the Cup in lederhosen.

Philipp Grubauer‘s day with the Stanley Cup is quickly approaching. The German goaltender will be spending August 13 in his hometown of Rosenheim, Germany, but wants to share the Cup with as many people as possible.
Grubauer will be offering a photo opportunity with him and the Stanley Cup during his day.
