The Dowd family just got one bundle of joy bigger.
Wednesday, Paige Dowd delivered the couple’s first girl. They named her Ruby James Elizabeth Dowd.
The Washington Capitals received some thrilling news before puck drop against the Buffalo Sabres. The DC government approved Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s waiver to reopen Capital One Arena for Capitals and Wizards games “effective immediately.” The approval means that Washington’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers will have up to 2,100 fans in the building on Tuesday.
Jakub Vrana and head coach Peter Laviolette responded to the news after the Capitals’ 4-3 victory over the Sabres.
Washington Capitals center Nic Dowd and his wife Paige founded a chairty called Dowd’s Crowd last season, which helps children on the autism spectrum attend hockey games.
“I saw how the day-to-day life of the parents can be challenging, and going to events that would be easy for some parents are more difficult for others,” Paige said. “Nic and I wanted to make it a safe environment for kids.”
Now the couple is combining with several of Nic’s Capitals teammates including TJ Oshie and Garnet Hathaway for a holiday auction that benefits DC school children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Nic and Paige Dowd took their 10-month-old son Louie to St. Cloud State University earlier this week. The college is where the couple first met and also became friends with Nick and Jenner Jensen.
Baby Lou got to skate with his dad at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and even got his own St. Cloud State jersey.
From Stanley Cups to inked rings around their finger, many Capitals players and their wives have gotten tattoos over the years that represent the greatest moments of their lives (or Wario on their high thigh).
Monday, Paige Dowd took to Instagram to show off her newest tattoo: her son’s name Lou in a black, thin script on her arm.
The NHL’s 2019-20 season was suspended in March due to the coronavirus. As friends and families search for fun things to do inside, memes and challenges on social media have helped pass the time. Last week, Washington Capitals wives’ turned to Instagram to do something called the First Pic Challenge.
The challenge involved couples sharing their first photo together to their Instagram Story. Some images, like from Lauren Oshie and Paige Dowd, revealed their significant other’s former shaggy hairstyles. Others, like Jenner Jensen’s, revealed the astonishing amount of time the couples have been dating.

Nic Dowd and Paige Dowd, who created the charity Dowd’s Crowd last year, are looking for your help during quarantine to complete their logo.
The couple is asking fans to fill out an outline of a puzzle piece. How you complete the challenge (photoshop, illustrator, crayons) is up to you. It’s a “perfect project for homeschool art class,” Paige said in a tweet.
The entire DMV is now under a “stay at home” order as the amount of positive COVID-19 cases continue to ramp up in the area. That means all types of non-essential local businesses are closed including local barbershops.
With Nic Dowd needed a haircut, Paige Dowd took the scissors literally into her own hands. Monday, in what she termed a “quarantine adventure”, she cut her husband’s hair.
The Washington Capitals won their second straight simulation game at Digital Capital One Arena, shellacking the New York Rangers 6-1. The NHL20 telecast replaced the real-life Capitals-Rangers game which was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Digi Nicklas Backstrom started the scoring (again), scoring his fourth goal in two games, while Digi Garnet Hathaway, Digi Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Digi TJ Oshie (2) added tallies.
Digi Nic Dowd also scored. The fourth-line center intercepted a defenseman’s shot from the point and lobbed the puck into the back of the net. “Proud of you,” Paige Dowd, Nic’s wife, said on Twitter laughing.
The Capitals have now scored 11 goals so far and none of them have been by Alex Ovechkin.
Very realistic. Just like Nic Dowd’s face.
The relationship between the National Hockey League and the autism community is a long-standing one, but until recently the focus has been focused primarily on financial support and raising awareness, with many teams holding fundraisers and hosting “Autism Awareness” nights.
In Washington, D.C. the Capitals’ unique engagement has been spearheaded by Paige and Nic Dowd. The couple came to D.C. when Nic was signed in the summer of 2018, and since then they’ve not only participated in the majority of the Capitals’ preexisting charitable endeavors–they also started their own.
“I saw how the day-to-day life of the parents can be challenging, and going to events that would be easy for some parents are more difficult for others,” Paige said to Taryn Bray for WashingtonCaps.com. “Nic and I wanted to make it a safe environment for kids to be able to enjoy a hockey game.”
Together they founded a program called “Dowd’s Crowd,” which helps children on the autism spectrum attend hockey games. Since many people with autism can be overwhelmed by stimuli like loud noises, bright lights, and large crowds–all typical features of a hockey game–they need some accommodations. Dowd’s Crowd provides resources to counteract, minimize, or soften those stimuli so that the kids can enjoy the game, like sound-canceling headphones and sunglasses.
