The Dowd family is about to become one bundle of joy bigger.

Friday afternoon, Paige Dowd announced that she is expecting the couple’s first child in January.

“Our sweet surprise 🌈 baby dowd coming january 2020” Dowd wrote on Instagram. “Thanks to my friend @nikkisaar for these photos! #momanddad #rainbowbaby”

A rainbow baby is a baby born to a couple who has experienced a previous pregnancy loss in the form of a miscarriage or stillbirth. This means the Dowds have faced some excruciating moments in the past to get to this moment. For Paige to share that news publicly shows a lot of strength and courage. Many expecting mothers go through this trauma, but keep it private. Paige’s announcement shows other families that they are not alone and helps make the topic less taboo to talk about.

In April, Nic Dowd signed a three-year extension with the Capitals after having a career year. The contract allowed the Dowds to buy a house (and do yard work). They also plan to get another dog.
