The National Hockey League is so very close to being fully back.
Teams around the league held their Media Day this week as they prepare to kick off their respective training camps and preseasons. The teams and their media partners took videos and photos for future game broadcasts, promotional content, and in-game entertainment.

Washington Capitals legendary center Nicklas Backstrom had offseason hip resurfacing surgery in June and is expected to be out for a large portion of the 2022-23 season due to the extensive rehab process.
That did not stop the Capitals from adding the silky Swede to their 68-man Training Camp roster. It also did not stop Backstrom from throwing on a full set of gear to participate in Wednesday’s Media Day activities.

The team held Media Day on Wednesday – its first official day of 2021 Training Camp. The team and its partners, such as NBC Sports Washington, took video and photos for future game broadcasts and promotions.

With the Washington Capitals eliminated from the playoffs Alex Ovechkin isn’t jumping onto any other teams’ bandwagons. During media day, one of the reporters asked Ovechkin if he was hoping to see former head coach Barry Trotz find success this year.
“To be honest with you, I don’t care,” Ovechkin said. “Who wants it, has won. I wish him luck–I wish all the teams luck–but it suck we’re not there.”

Evgeny Kuznetsov is good at many things: scoring during the playoffs (32 points in 24 games), being being assistant to the general manager, and centering the top line of a Stanley Cup-winning team.
On media day, however, we learned that there is something at which Evgeny Kuznetsov is not very good: blowing on a noisemaker. NBC Sports Washington has the video.

Thursday during Media Day, the Washington Capitals got out some popular tabletop games — such as Jenga and Don’t Break The Ice — and duked it out on camera.
As you might have guessed, the players were predictably terrible at the games and at times, needed instruction on how to actually play them.
“So what do we do? One (hippo) at a time?” John Carlson asked before playing Hungry Hungry Hippos.
Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom’s somewhat limited English also threw a wrench into a game of Guess Who?
“Is your guy use gel… in the hair?” Alex Ovechkin asked.
“A little bit,” Nicklas Backstrom said.
“A little bit?” Ovechkin responded confused.

The Washington Capitals hosted their annual Media Luncheon on Tuesday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex following practice. The media was treated to lunch before the players joined in on the afternoon reception. Interviews on camera followed, and one-on-one chats off screen filled the rest of the afternoon. Our own Chris Gordon — and Evgeny Kuznetsov — joined the CSN crew for a chat on the upcoming regular season.
Each Caps player was dressed to impress. From Alex Ovechkin in his (in)famous shiny light blue suit, to Braden Holtby, who prepared a sublime plaid two piece with a yellow pocket square. Meanwhile, we dressed like we just got out of bed.

On Tuesday the Capitals hosted practice prior to their annual Media Luncheon. With the season opener happening Thursday Night, and the full roster already set, this was the first practice of the season we’ve covered with a full roster attendance.
The boys were ready to work, but also were able to have some fun towards at the end of the skate. With both Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer in their respective nets, the rest of the team practiced one-on-one shootout attempts. Each miss for a shooter meant a set of pushups, and each score earned bragging rights.
