Alex Ovechkin’s ninth Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy confirmed as NHL officially announces award winners for 2019-20 regular season

While announcing the league’s 24-team playoff, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman declared the 2019-20 regular season over. That meant Alex Ovechkin would win his ninth Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy and share it with the Bruins’ David Pastrnak after both players scored 48 goals this past year. NHLPA boss Donald Fehr later cast doubt on that result, saying there had been no decision yet on where the stats would go for the NHL’s play-in games and round-robin games during the 24-team playoff.

Two days later, the NHL is officially announcing several of its 2019-20 regular-season award winners, suggesting this issue has been put to bed. Ovechkin and Pastrnak are confirmed to have won the Rocket while Leon Draisaitl won the Art Ross Trophy, the Boston Bruins won the Presidents’ Trophy, and the goaltending duo of Tuuka Rask and Jaroslav Halak won the William Jennings Trophy.

Alex Ovechkin wins ninth Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy after Gary Bettman announces 2019-20 regular season is over

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the 2019-20 regular season is considered over while announcing the league’s 24-team playoff, return to play plan.

That means Alex Ovechkin has won the Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy for a record ninth time after tying David Pastrnak for the league-lead in goals with 48.

Ovechkin has led or shared the league lead in goals in seven of the past eight seasons.

NHL turns Rocket Richard race into horse race with animated graph

Alex Ovechkin would win his record ninth Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy if the 2019-20 season does not restart due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Russian machine is tied with David Pastrnak with 48 goals.

The 34-year-old’s journey to the top spot in the league was fueled by late-season hot streak which saw the Russian forward score 14 goals in seven January and February games, including three hat tricks.

Nicklas Backstrom on Alex Ovechkin’s eighth goal-scoring title: ‘Maybe we should start calling him Mr. Rocket’

Alex Ovechkin wrapped up his eighth goal-scoring title Saturday after scoring 51 times during the 2018-19 season. It’s the most goals the Russian machine has tallied since 2015. And he accomplished this despite coming off a shorter than normal summer due to the team’s first Stanley Cup championship.

With all that success comes accolades. And Ovechkin has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, first given out in 1999, eight times – six more than any other player.

Monday, after the Capitals’ first postseason practice, Nicklas Backstrom shared a new nickname he came up with for Ovi.

This is how tantalizingly close Leon Draisaitl got to catching Alex Ovechkin in the Rocket Richard race

As the final games of the 2018-19 NHL regular season wrapped up on Saturday night, Alex Ovechkin secured his eighth Rocket Richard trophy. Ovi tallied 51 goals, his highest total in five years, with only Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl coming close with 50.

But, it turns out, that Draisaitl came dangerously close to tying Ovechkin in the race for the Rocket, with a wild swing from Calgary’s Rasmus Andersson the only thing denying him.

Though it was close, no one in the NHL scored as many goals as Alex Ovechkin this season. With 51 goals, his highest total in five years, Ovechkin wins the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy. It’s his 8th time doing so.

Race for the Rocket Richard Trophy heats up as John Tavares and Leon Draisaitl score hat tricks

You guys, the NHL goals race is getting uncomfortably tight.

A week after Alex Ovechkin was projected to be the only player to hit 50 goals this season, John Tavares and Leon Draisaitl had career-best games on consecutive nights, narrowing the Russian machine’s goal lead.

Alex Ovechkin’s name gets engraved onto Conn Smythe Trophy

Before finally raising the Stanley Cup for the first time in his 13-year career, Alex Ovechkin was named 2018 Playoff MVP by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Ovechkin, who scored 15 goals in 24 playoff games, held up the Conn Smythe Trophy and posed for photos, but treated the trophy like an afterthought that night. It wasn’t until the NHL Awards several weeks later where Ovechkin cozied up to the trophy.

TSN reimagined the Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy if it was renamed after Alex Ovechkin

Saturday against the New Jersey Devils, Alex Ovechkin scored twice, ending the season with 49 goals. Ovechkin (32 years, 203 days) became the oldest player to win the NHL’s goalscoring title since Phil Esposito in 1974-75 (33 years, 45 days w/ BOS).

Even more impressive is how many times Ovechkin has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the league’s leading goalscorer.
