ARLINGTON, VA — Hockey history came to DC to celebrate the Washington Capitals’ Rock the Red era. As part of the Caps’ 50th anniversary festivities, the team hosted trophies from the Hockey Hall of Fame for fans to see up close.
The collection featured 15 trophies, including every major award won by the Capitals except for the Stanley Cup. After going on display at the Harry Benson Gallery ahead of Friday’s ‘Rock the Red’ Eras Night, the trophies went to MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Saturday for an open practice.
After getting off the ice Saturday, Alex Ovechkin made sure to get family photos with the hardware he’s racked up over a legendary 20-year career.
Ovechkin alone has won the Hart, Ted Lindsay, Conn Smythe, Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Art Ross, and Calder since joining the NHL, becoming the only player in league history to win all six. The moment happened with Ovechkin just 10 goals away (885) from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goals record of 894.
Both of Ovi’s young sons, Sergei and Ilya, got an opportunity to get an up-close look at the NHL hardware and further understand their father’s incredible accomplishments.

Other individual awards present at the showcase included the Norris, Selke, Vezina, Jack Adams, King Clancy, Jennings, and Masterton trophies, as well as both the Presidents’ Trophy and Prince of Wales Trophy for team performance.
Besides the trophies, the open practice also featured autograph sessions from Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green, Karl Alzner, and Brent Johnson, who the Capitals had honored during a pregame ceremony Friday night.
