Fresh off the franchise’s first Stanley Cup and and a day after a Championship Parade, the Capitals cleaned out their lockers and met with the media one final time before heading home for the summer.
Instead of talking about what went wrong, Capitals players talked about everything that went right and realizing a dream they had as a kid.
Gone were depressing images. This year, the Caps had ALL the smiles.

Before the Capitals won their first ever Stanley Cup Final game on home ice, the team took a skate at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.
With a full house packed with fans, the Capitals looked loose and were having maybe the most fun they have had all season. The looseness might have gone the wrong way, when a Dmitry Orlov snapshot deflected up into the Capitals office windows. No one was hurt by the falling glass, but I am sure the window has been better days.

Ahead of Game Three, Washington DC shut down streets surrounding Capital One Arena to accommodate a watch party and pregame concert featuring Sting and Shaggy.
This move may have created an unintended consequence: a travel nightmare for players trying to gain access to the arena’s underground parking garage. It appears a few of them got creative.
Caps skaters TJ Oshie and Matt Niskanen were spotted riding a metro car with fans to Capital One Arena.

The Capitals first pairing, consisting of Dmitry Orlov and Matt Niskanen, were on the ice for every goal the Lightning scored in Tampa Bay’s 3-2 Game Five victory.
In terms of possession, the pair has been the Caps’ best in the 2018 postseason despite playing against other teams’ best players. Orlov, at five-on-five, owns a 53.1 shot attempts percentage while Niskanen is 51.1 percent. They own an even goals-for percentage (50 percent).
But during the first period, the first pairing was dominated and after the game, Niskanen took the blame.
The Henrik Lundqvist-less New York Rangers are currently going through a rebuild, and Monday night at Madison Square Garden, the Capitals took several young Rags players to school.
The Capitals scored four times in the first period, taking advantage of a hole-y defense and poor goaltending. Alexandar Georgiev was pulled in favor of Ondrej Pavelec after giving up three goals in the first 8:54 of the game.
The time of year has come for the Capitals Better Halves gift baskets auction. As in previous years, all of the baskets include autographed jerseys and Caps merchandise, along with unique items that represent some of the players’ favorite things and give fans a fun glimpse at their personalities.
Andre Burrakovsky’s includes a copy of season one of Game of Thrones and plenty of IKEA goodies, Jakub Vrana threw in his favorite cereal, and the baskets of both Braden Holtby and Nicklas Backstrom feature books that are presumably loved by the respective players.

The Washington Capitals fell behind 2-0 early against the Philadelphia Flyers. Coming out of the All-Star Break, the Metropolitan Division’s first-place team looked out of sorts to start the game. With only five games in 19 days, the unevenness is understandable.
What isn’t understandable is why Matt Niskanen forced his way into the penalty box when he wasn’t actually called for a penalty.
Matt Niskanen, one of the Capitals best defenders, has missed 14 games this season due to injury. In October, Nisky suffered a thumb injury against the Devils and missed a full month of games. The Capitals wobbled during that time.
Tuesday, the Virginia, MN native sat out against Carolina with an upper-body injury, but that appears likely to be the only game he’ll miss.
With the Capitals having four days off this week, Niskanen has healed and will not miss any other time.
The Washington Capitals could potentially be without two of their best players Tuesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen is out after suffering an upper-body injury against the Devils on Saturday night. Meanwhile first-line center Nicklas Backstrom is sick and could not make it to the morning skate.
