Devante Smith-Pelly on 2018 Stanley Cup-winning team: ‘That special feeling honestly doesn’t go away’

For former Capital Devante Smith-Pelly, the team’s 2018 Stanley Cup win is never far from his mind. He spoke with Alan May and Alexa Landestoy last Thursday on NBC Sports Washington, reflecting back as we near the five-year anniversary of that magical run for the Cup.

“I’ve watched all those games front to back so many times,” Smith-Pelly said. “It’s actually crazy.”

Devante Smith-Pelly gets loud ovation in return to Capital One Arena, drops ceremonial first puck

Devante Smith-Pelly made his grand return to Capital One Arena on Saturday, nearly four years after last suiting up for the Washington Capitals.

A lot of things have changed over those years: DSP retired and Alex Ovechkin is nearing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. But there’s one thing that remains a constant: Capitals fans still love DSP to the moon and back just like they did before.

Smith-Pelly was honored by the team on Saturday and was a huge part of the team’s Black History celebration against the New York Rangers.

Devante Smith-Pelly on the best part of the Capitals’ championship parade

Devante Smith-Pelly is back in Washington DC for the first time since leaving the Capitals after the 2018-19 season. Smith-Pelly will drop the ceremonial first puck during the team’s Black History celebration against the New York Rangers at 1 pm.

Smith-Pelly will always be celebrated in these parts due to his incredible and clutch performance during the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, which earned him the distinction of “unlikely hero” from Wayne Gretzky.

DSP scored seven goals in those 24 playoff games – including the game-tying goal in Game Five of the Stanley Cup Final – which helped give the Capitals their first championship.

When speaking to the media, DSP was asked about that run and what made it most special. For DSP, it wasn’t the goals on the ice – though of course, that was amazing. It was what he saw on top of the double-decker bus during the team’s championship parade.

Capitals announce Devante Smith-Pelly will return to Capital One Arena for Black History Night

The Washington Capitals are bringing back to the area a former player who many consider a hero.

Devante Smith-Pelly, who scored seven huge goals during the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup run, will return to DC for the Capitals’ Black History Night celebration on February 25.

The Capitals play the New York Rangers at home with puck drop scheduled for 1 pm.

Devante Smith-Pelly, a monumentally crucial part of the Washington Capitals’ 2018 run to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup, announced his retirement from professional hockey after an 11-year career.

DSP revealed the news via his personal Instagram on Friday.

Devante Smith-Pelly attends ‘Black Ice’ movie premiere at Toronto International Film Festival

Saturday, 2018 Stanley Cup champion Devante Smith-Pelly attended the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival to see the premiere of Black Ice.

The film is a Canadian documentary that chronicles the history of the Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes as well as the lingering anti-black racism in the sport of ice hockey. It boasts Drake, LeBron James, and Maverick Carter as producers.

Where are they now? The Washington Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup championship team.

The Washington Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights four games to one to win the Stanley Cup four years ago this week.

Since then, the Capitals have not won a playoff series since, getting first-rounded four consecutive times. While the Caps’ core and identity have largely stayed the same, the 2018 team’s supporting cast has moved on. Only nine of those 27 players are still on the team while two others, Shane Gersich and Pheonix Copley, remain in the organization.

Some key members of the 2018 championship team have flourished elsewhere. Others have wound down their careers or retired in different organizations or leagues.

Devante Smith-Pelly has his professional tryout contract extended with the Laval Rocket

Stanley Cup Champion Devante Smith-Pelly is staying in Quebec for now.

Monday, the Laval Rocket announced that they have extended DSP’s professional tryout contract. The clutch winger initially signed on for his PTO with the Rocket just after Christmas.

Capitals create permanent display at Capital One Arena to honor its Black players

The Washington Capitals announced the details of a new Black Hockey History Display that will remain permanently at Capital One Arena. Capitals fans who attend Washington’s home game against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday will be the first to glimpse it in person.

The display is located on the main concourse by section 116 and features tributes to Stanley Cup champion Devante Smith-Pelly, Joel Ward, Mike Marson, and others.
