Evgeny Kuznetsov got high-sticked by Michael Del Zotto during a power play late in the second period. The impact was so violent that it almost ripped off Kuzy’s helmet.
Alex Ovechkin nearly tore the roof off Nationwide Arena on All-Star Weekend by using his hockey stick as a baseball bat. He failed to connect three times during the Breakaway Challenge, but this Thursday night against Ottawa Ovechkin did it in a actual freaking game.
This is incredible.
Alex Ovechkin has long been criticized for his play away from the puck. On Sunday his tenacious forechecking in the Blues zone led to his second goal of the game (see his first) and his 31st of the season.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin came out in the first period literally on fire. He delivered three big hits, leading all Capitals skaters. He accidentally hurt Kevin Shattenkirk (lower-body injury, will not return) because he’s made of old USSR Titanium. He also scored his 30th goal of the season, which meant FREE ROY ROGERS FOR EVERYBODY.
Our earlier post is already out of date. With his power-play goal in the second period, Alex Ovechkin is now sole occupant of the NHL’s goal-scoring lead.
That goal was the second of the game. It’s also the second by Ovi in this game. He’s the only thing that matters tonight.

Like most of you, we were skeptical of Jay Beagle‘s spot on the top line, but darned if Beags didn’t make it happen for the Caps on the game’s first goal, a deflection by Alex Ovechkin off Karl Alzner‘s shot.

That black disc-like thing is the puck.
Alex Ovechkin scored again.
Twice actually. In the first period alone. The second one destroyed the net cam.
The Capitals lost both games of their back-to-back this weekend, but Alex Ovechkin did all he could to keep the Caps close. Against Predators on Friday night, Ovechkin scored two goals in the second period to erase a two-goal hole. The next night in Dallas, Ovechkin scored a breakaway goal twenty seconds into the third period to tie the game.
That one was a beauty.
During Alex Ovechkin‘s ten-year career as a Capital, there have been times when Washington simply did not deserve to win, but then Ovi would let his world-class talent shine, and he’d will the team back into games they should have lost.
Tonight is one of those nights.
Ovechkin scored two goals back to back in the second period to quickly and defiantly erase the Predators’ two-goal lead. After his second goal, Joe Beninati sarcastically cracked, “Kid’s got a future.”
He sure does.
The Caps’ fourth line, who had been irritating Colorado all night, drew a big penalty late in the second period. After Tom Wilson drove to the crease, Semyon Varlmov threw a left cross that hit the Toronto native square in the face.
Not really though. Varly got all face shield. Great acting job by Willy Baby.
