Alex Ovechkin scored twice against the Ottawa Senators Friday night and received Ovi! Ovi! chants after passing Mark Messier for eighth on the all-time goals list.
But Senators’ fans gave Ovi an even bigger salute at the end of the game.
Down 3-0 in an almost meaningless game, you could forgive Alex Ovechkin if he wanted to phone this one in. But nyet.
On a second-period power play, Ovi took an Ovi shot from the Ovi spot to score Ovi’s 53rd goal of the season. It’s a classic and a record-breaker.

If there ever was any doubt on who should win the MVP this year, that discussion is now closed. Alex Ovechkin scored a second goal on Carey Price. (See his first here.) This time it came on a perfectly placed rebound, low to the ice.

With a power-play snipe to beat Carey Price in the second period of Thursday’s Canadiens game, Alex Ovechkin scored his 473rd goal as a Capital, finally passing the great Peter Bondra.

With a simple wrist shot from the slot, Alex Ovechkin has tied Peter Bondra for the franchise lead in goals, hit the 50-goal mark for the 6th time, and given his Capitals a two-goal lead.

Alex Ovechkin is now one goal away from 50. Late on a second-period power play, Ovechkin received a beautiful cross-ice saucer pass from Nicklas Backstrom, just outside the left circle.
Ovechkin wound up and fired into Joel Ward‘s screen. The puck appears to deflect off Dan Boyle‘s skate, through Cam Talbot‘s five-hole, and into the net.
And that makes 48 goals for Alex Ovechkin. Early in the first period, Joel Ward set Ovechkin loose in the Rangers zone. Ovi outmuscled the D, moved to the Ovi spot, and released a screened shot to beat Cam Talbot.

Alex Ovechkin just scored again– this time off a beautiful face-off win by Nicklas Backstrom.
Unable to muster much offense during the first 35 minutes of the game, the Capitals finally woke from their slumber during four-on-four with the Wild (Thanks, Tom Wilson)!
Alex Ovechkin was of course the benefactor. He scored his 46th goal of the season on an impressive individual effort. Taking a pass from Karl Alzner in the defensive zone, Ovechkin turned on the afterburners in neutral and slung a low and hard shot toward Devan Dubnyk. Dubnyk gave up a huge rebound off his pads, and Ovechkin beat him glove side.
Alex Ovechkin is nearly impossible to stop on the power play– even if you know a shot his coming. He’s even more difficult to stop when one of your teammates deflects his shot and makes it go in the opposite direction.
That’s what happened during the Caps’ first-period power play against the Rangers. Evgeny Kuznetsov found Ovechkin near the right circle. Ovechkin shot, and then suicide-diving Jesper Fast deflected the puck past Cam Talbot.
