Alex Ovechkin signs five-year, $47.5 million extension with Capitals

The Washington Capitals re-signed Alex Ovechkin on Tuesday.

The deal is worth $9.5 million per season, which is essentially the same salary ($9.54 million) Ovi made in his landmark 13-year, $124 million deal. The Capitals dealt defenseman Brenden Dillon the night before to net nearly $4 million in cap savings.

The contract will keep Ovechkin in Washington through the 2025-26 season. Ovechkin was his own agent during negotiations.

The latest rumblings about Alex Ovechkin’s negotiations with the Capitals

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan spoke to the media after the NHL Draft on Saturday and said he anticipated the team would get a new contract signed by Alex Ovechkin by Wednesday.

“We are making progress,” MacLellan told the press. “Our goal is to finish it up here by free agency.

On Sunday, two NHL insiders spoke about what a possible Ovechkin extension could look like.

Alex Ovechkin says he’s still negotiating with Capitals on contract extension, leaves open possibility of returning to Dynamo Moscow

Alex Ovechkin’s 13-year, $124 million contract officially ends on July 28, the first day of free agency. Meanwhile, the Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft will be held on Wednesday, July 21. NHL teams’ protection lists are due on Saturday.

With 12 days to go until possibly hitting the open market for the first time in his career, Ovechkin says he is still negotiating with the Capitals.

Ovechkin made the comments in a Russian language interview with Match TV’s Pavel Lysenkov. It’s the first time Ovechkin has spoken to the media since Elliotte Friedman reported that his NHL sources believe Ovi and the Capitals are waiting to announce his new deal until after the Expansion Draft.

Capitals post photo of Alex Ovechkin on Instagram with cryptic caption

Alex Ovechkin is set to be an unrestricted free agent in exactly 16 days. Where things stand between team and player on a new deal is a mystery. During the season, Ovechkin described his negotiations with the Capitals as status quo and we’ll see to, at the very end of the year, I want to finish my career here. I’m pretty sure we will do something soon. That seems pretty optimistic right? Then insider Elliotte Friedman put it out there that it’s believed that Ovi and the Caps have come to an agreement, but are waiting to announce the news – ie: the contract is in the drawer – likely to allow the team to protect an extra player during the Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft.

So with all that context established, the Washington Capitals took to their Instagram account on Monday and posted a seemingly innocuous photo of Ovechkin looking for a fist bump.

Is it vapid #summercontent or is there a hidden message here?

Elliotte Friedman says he can’t find anyone in the NHL who thinks Alex Ovechkin’s extension isn’t already ‘in the drawer’

Alex Ovechkin’s 13-year, $124 million contract officially ends on July 28. The Capitals and its superstar captain met on a contract extension multiple times during the season — Ovechkin is representing himself in the negotiations — but beyond some optimistic quotes, not much is known where things actually stand.

“I want to finish my career here,” Ovechkin said at the end of the season. “I’m pretty sure we will do something soon.”

“I think both sides are interested,” MacLellan added. “We want Ovi. The ownership wants Ovi to finish his career here. Everyone wants him to finish his career (here). He’s saying the same thing. I think we’ll get it worked out in the end.”

“Alex knows that if he plays five more years, 10 more years, whatever it is, we’ve got his back,” Capitals majority owner, Ted Leonsis, said earlier in May. “Our commitment to him is to continue to have great teams. We’ll spend to the cap, we’ll try to win championships. And that’s what he’s focused on because that will be his legacy.”

On Monday, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported what he knows and it seems to point to what everyone is assuming.

Alex Ovechkin is confident about signing an extension with the Caps: ‘I want to finish my career here. I’m pretty sure we will do something soon.’

Alex Ovechkin’s 13-year, $124 million contract, which he originally signed in 2008, expires on July 28 – the first day of NHL free agency this year.

After a season full of little to no updates from Capitals GM Brian MacLellan or Ovi about a contract extension, there seemed to be a reason for concern. But during Breakdown Day on Tuesday morning, Ovi assuaged those worries, saying he wanted to end his NHL career as a Capital.

“I’m confident,” Ovechkin said of re-signing. “We still have time. Obviously, I want to finish my career here. I’m pretty sure we will do something soon.”

Ted Leonsis on Alex Ovechkin’s contract negotiations: ‘I’m not concerned. He’s not concerned. Our concern is the Boston Bruins.’

Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis spoke to the media on Friday morning and one of the biggest topics of the conversation was negotiations on Alex Ovechkin’s new contract.

After Brian MacLellan set expectations that a deal could be done as early as training camp, there seemingly has been no news.

Leonsis is not worried though.

Alex Ovechkin on signing a contract extension and finishing his career with the Capitals: ‘We’ll see’

A year or two ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Alex Ovechkin would sign a contract extension, chase Wayne Gretzky’s goal record, and finish his NHL career with the Washington Capitals. “I’ve been playing only for two teams in my life: Dynamo Moscow and the Caps,” Ovechkin said a while back. ” I don’t like too much to change teams.”

Now, things are getting a little uncomfortable.

Over the last week, Ovechkin and Capitals’ general manager Brian MacLellan commented on the negotiations three different times. None of the quotes are particularly optimistic or revealing. But maybe this is crunch time and they’re playing chicken and waiting for the first person to blink? I don’t know. Ugh, boys, just come to an agreement already.

Brian MacLellan says he will get a new contract done with Alex Ovechkin ‘at some point’: ‘We just have to find a sweet spot that we agree on’

Brian MacLellan hosted a press conference with the media on Friday and shared an update on his contract negotiations with Alex Ovechkin — one of the greatest players in NHL history.

NBC Sports insider Bob McKenzie reported in early March that the Capitals general manager and Ovechkin were punting on talks until April after meeting recently.

Report: Alex Ovechkin and Washington Capitals table contract negotiations until April

NBCSN’s Bob McKenzie is reporting that Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan and superstar Alex Ovechkin have had “multiple conversations” about a possible contract extension during the season.

After their most recent talk, the two sides agreed to table talks until April.
