Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov congratulate Russia on gold-medal win on Instagram

On Saturday evening, the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) took first place in the men’s hockey competition with a 4-3 overtime win, giving Russia its first gold medal in hockey since 1992. The team defeated Germany, which took silver after a huge upset over the nine-time Canadian champions in the semifinals of the tournament.

Alex Ovechkin, who is still clearly displeased with the NHL’s decision to not allow its athletes to compete in PyeongChang, congratulated his fellow countrymen on their win with a picture on Instgram.

Team USA shootout stars TJ Oshie and Gigi Marvin were the king and queen of their high school dance in 2005

Capitals forward TJ Oshie made a name for himself in the 2014 Sochi Olympics with an astounding shootout performance that pushed Team USA to defeat Russia. He even got a shoutout from President Obama. Last night, Gigi Marvin did the same, ultimately contributing a shootout goal to help the American women’s hockey team win gold.

It turns out these two have more in common that their shootout skills: the pair not only went to the same high school, but were crowned Queen and King of the school’s “Frosty Festival” in 2005.

Olympic hockey and SNL’s Leslie Jones are a very good mix

Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones is an official NBC correspondent at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. On Sunday, Jones attended her first ever women’s hockey game, and the resulting commentary was hilarious.

As the game progressed, Jones came to the same conclusion that many of us do watching Team USA play. We’re all more than a little bit in love with Hilary Knight.

How’s the US men’s Olympic team doing? Don’t ask Brooks Orpik; he’s watching the women’s team.

The Pyeongchang Winter Olympics are in full swing. With the NHL sitting this year out, everyone is curious about whether the players have been tuning in.

On Monday, Alex Ovechkin confirmed he was a hard no on watching the games. #ThanksBettman.

Teammate and veteran D-man Brooks Orpik, on the other hand, has been taking in some of the hockey.

Wojtek Wolski scores twice for Team Canada 16 months after breaking his neck

A year and a half ago, former Capital Wojtek Wolski thought his career was over after breaking his neck during a KHL game. At the time, Wolski even believed he was never going to walk again.

On Thursday at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Wolski scored twice for Team Canada.

Caps Winter Classic toque spotted on live TV during Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

Over the last week, tons of sports fans from across the globe have flown to Pyeongchang, South Korea to take in this year’s Olympic games. And it appears one of our own was in attendance.

Early Saturday morning, several DC hockey fans were shocked when an onlooker was shown on live TV wearing a Caps Winter Classic toque. The Caps fan was standing in the front row during a snowboarding event.

NBC4’s Doug Kammerer wipes out during weather report at ice rink

Over the last several months, popular NBC4 meteorologist Doug Kammerer has been sporadically doing his weather spots on location around the DC area, using a popup green screen. Combining with a second meteorologist back at the NBC4 Washington studio (usually Frederick County’s own Amelia Draper), Kammerer does the weather and then interviews or shines a light on local community members who he finds important.

The unpredictability of the live shots has given the weather reports more personality – such as Tuesday’s rendezvous at an ice rink. Kammerer was on location at SkateQuest located in Reston, Virginia. Kammerer tried to play hockey with some of the local kids and I’m going to go ahead and let you guess what happened next.

Chris Bourque received a very patriotic Olympic sendoff from the Hershey Bears

After being named to the Team USA roster at the start of the new year, Hershey Bears forward Chris Bourque received a warm sendoff from the organization ahead of his departure for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

This comes days after the Capitals ran an emotional Olympic sendoff video for radio announcer John Walton.

John Walton cries in radio booth after Capitals reveal surprise Olympics sendoff video

Tribute videos are usually reserved for players, but Wednesday night at Capital One Arena, the Capitals aired a special video package for radio play-by-play announcer John Walton.

Walton is leaving the radio booth for the next several weeks as he leads the play-by-play of NBC’s women’s hockey coverage at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
