Five-year-old cancer survivor freaks out meeting Tom Wilson

On Saturday, the Washington Capitals hosted Hockey Fights Cancer Night at Verizon Center. There were so many great moments that evening that it’s hard to cover them all. But here’s another one.

Nicklas Backstrom’s Wish Kid for the evening was five-year-old cancer survivor Maeve, who is currently in remission. Before the game, Maeve and her newfound friend Addy, stood by the glass during warmups. It was at that moment Maeve first met hunky forward Tom Wilson.

Her reaction is priceless.

Joe Beninati’s kind words for Dave Strader

During the second intermission of Hockey Fights Cancer Night, Caps TV announcers Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin said who they fought for.

“My mom and my dad and Courtney Druce,” Laughlin said. “And I’m fighting for everybody out there. It’s something that we’ve got to be aware of. It’s great awareness tonight and we should fight for everyone who gets this disease.”

Joe B took a moment to share some warm wishes for Dallas Stars play-by-play man Dave Strader. In June, Strader — one of the most talented broadcasters in the league — was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer in his bile duct. He was forced to take a leave of absence from the team.

Ovechkin, Oshie, and Eller: Caps score three third period goals in 4:15 to win

It was a close game with the Florida Panthers. For a long time, the Caps pushed but were held at bay by FLA goalie Roberto Luongo. And then, down one goal in the third period, Washington erupted for three goals in less than five minutes.

Third period explosion: Caps beat Panthers 4-2!

Welcome to my first game recap. Because I am a rookie re-capper, expect my game to lack frills. Thrills will be included.

The Washington Capitals were able to extend their winning streak to five games with their 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers tonight.

A little over five minutes into the game, Jared McCann opened the scoring for the Caps’ opponent for only the second time in eleven games. Halfway through the second period, TJ Oshie scored to tie the game on an insanely accurate shot after an insanely precise pass from Alex Ovechkin on an odd-man break.

Reilly Smith gave the Panthers another one goal lead three minutes into the third period beating Matt Niskanen on a break on the power play. The Capitals captain would tie the game a few minutes later with some net front presence on a Brooks Orpik drive.

TJ Oshie put the Caps in the lead on a cookie-jar shot on a semi-break almost 11 minutes into the third. The Caps built themselves to their third two-goal lead in as many games following Lars Eller’s net front marker less than two minutes later. The Caps held on for the 4-2 win on home ice.

TJ Oshie scores immediately after Jill Sorenson interviews Addy, the Wish Kid he’s playing for

Coming back from commercial while the Caps were down 1-0 to the Florida Panthers, CSN’s Jill Sorenson conducted a short interview with a short, tough, special little girl named Addy Flint. Addy was enthusiastic about her favorite player, one Trance Jazz Oshie. The interview concluded and we returned to play.

Then TJ Oshie scored.

Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby hold hands with Wish Kids during anthem and other amazing things from Hockey Fights Cancer Night

Saturday night, the Capitals hosted Hockey Fights Cancer Night at Verizon Center. It was adorable.

During the national anthem, Alex Ovechkin and Braden Holtby held hands with two of the Wish Kids during the singing of the national anthem.

During pregame warm-ups, Jill Sorenson conducted a precious Hockey Fights Cancer interview with Peter, a 17-year-old who’s in remission from Ewing’s Sarcoma and leukemia. As it began, Justin Williams skated by and made sure to say hello.

Caps vs. Panthers pregame: S-s-s-saturday night

Sup, fam. Tonight we get to watch the Caps take on the Florida Panthers.

The Panthers are sitting at an even .500 and, like us, are coming off from an OT victory. Panthers goalie, Roberto Luongo will start in net while the team tries to get back on a winning path. One of the players to keep an eye on will be the Panthers’ free agency pick-up Jonathan Marchessault who currently leads the team with six goals and six assists. My scorching take for the evening is that we should keep trying to extend our streak and try really hard to win the game but NOT by giving up 3 goals and winning in OT.

We begin at 7:00 PM on CSN. Let’s hang.
