It was a close game with the Florida Panthers. For a long time, the Caps pushed but were held at bay by FLA goalie Roberto Luongo. And then, down one goal in the third period, Washington erupted for three goals in less than five minutes.
First up: Alex Ovechkin with a goal you don’t get to see often. Ovi screens the goalie, wreaking havoc up front with his 6’3″, 240 lbs. frame, and tips in a shot from Brooks Orpik, who only shoots once every other game.
Pivot and tap. Simple enough, but so nice.
That gives Ovi seven goals in eleven games if you’re keeping track, and you damn well better be.
Second, at 10:58, is Tackleberry Jedi Oshie, scoring his second of the night. Oshie screams up the ice and, for the second time that night, roofs the puck to beat Luongo.
Oshie now has six goals on the season, but this one was his prettiest.
Finally, at 13:27, here comes mean Lars Eller with a five holer. John Carlson put the puck in the slot, but it was Eller who knocks it down, pauses for a moment, and completes Luongo’s collapse with a simple, low shot.
There’s something there for everyone. A greasy goal from the captain, a stellar goal from the skills guy, and the role-player playing his role in a big way for an important insurance goal.
A fun night on home ice.
