Tuesday night, the Caps beat the Toronto Maple Leafs by a score of 4-1. It was a strong road game by the Capitals, in which they shut down the Leafs’ superstars save for a last-minute powerplay goal by Mitch Marner to spoil the shutout. There was a lot to like last night. Kevin Shattenkirk finally netted his first goal as a Cap from the Ovi Spot™, and Nate Schmidt escaped his Schmidtuation with a very pretty goal. Alex Ovechkin also moved into second place all-time among Russian scorers.
While it felt like the Caps were in control from start to finish, shot attempts were even in this game at 46 to 44 in favor of the Caps at five-on-five. The disparity was a bit larger in terms of shots on net, with 31 to 21 in favor of the Caps. All in all, only six of the Caps’ five-on-five shot attempts were blocked.

Toronto-native Tom Wilson continues to turn a corner in his development. The winger has points in three of his last four games while skating on a fourth line consisting of Jay Beagle and Daniel Winnik.
Both Beagle (13) and Winnik (12) have set new career highs in goals. On Tuesday, Wilson tied the high water-mark he set last year.
“Our top-six, that’s what you are going to see tonight,” Barry Trotz said nearly three weeks ago after finalizing his defensive lineup. “That’s our top-six. Nate is seven.”
Except seventh defenseman Nate Schmidt keeps making that already bad decision look worse and worse. Tuesday night after stepping in for an injured John Carlson, Schmidt scored his third goal of the season. Despite a long stretch in-between games (March 14), Schmidt has goals in consecutive outings.
Tuesday night the Washington Capitals took a trip to Toronto to see the Maple Leafs. The game began and Alex Ovechkin began immediately slamming Maple Leafs into the boards. Almost like he had some internalized frustration or he’s really kore — i mean caught up in something. Anyway, the first goal came from Lars Eller after an absolutely gorgeous cycle play. The game headed into the second with the Capitals outshooting the Maple Leafs 13-3 but only leading with a score of 1-0.
Second period, we saw a Kevin Shattenkirk goal. Yes, you heard that correctly, we finally got to see a Kevin Shattenkirk goal after a great power play sequence. The second period ended with the Caps up on shots at 13-10 and the score at 2-0.
Third period. Human angel who doubles as a defenseman, Nate Schmidt, came in huge for the team and put one to the back of the net. Then? A Tom Wilson goal in front of his friends and family! The game ended with a final goal from Mitch Marner to steal Grubauer’s shut out.
With three games to go, the Caps look great. Bring it on home.
Caps beat Maple Leafs, 4-1!

Alex Ovechkin accomplished a bit of history on Kevin Shattenkirk’s first goal as a Capital.
Ovechkin’s secondary assist on the power-play tally gave him 1,033 career points. That point leap-frogs Ovechkin past Alexander Mogilny for second place on the all-time points list among Russian born players.
It took 16 games, but Kevin Shattenkirk has finally scored for his new team.
And it happened off a crafty new wrinkle to the Caps power play.
The Washington Capitals could clinch the President’s Trophy for the second straight year with a win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and a Penguins loss.
The Caps scored the game’s only goal against the Leafs in the first period after Lars Eller tallied his twelfth goal of the season. It came off a stunning cycle by the Caps’ third line.
A day after the NHL said “No Olympics for you!,” Alex Ovechkin is taking out his anger on the Maple Leafs.
In the first period, Ovechkin doled out four hits. His most vicious bodycheck was this ka-bong behind the net on Connor Brown.
This just in. Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson is a late scratch against the Leafs tonight. And you guys, Nate Schmidt is in.
According to the Capitals, Carlson took rushes before the game, but was not playing well enough to play. He is out day-to-day with a lower body injury.
