Ottawa Senators fans give standing ovation to Alex Ovechkin after he passes Mark Messier in goals

Alex Ovechkin scored twice against the Ottawa Senators Friday night and received Ovi! Ovi! chants after passing Mark Messier for eighth on the all-time goals list.

But Senators’ fans gave Ovi an even bigger salute at the end of the game.

“He’s getting a standing ovation here with the fans left here in this building,” Craig Laughlin said on the Capitals’ telecast on NBC Sports Washington.

Ovechkin raised his stick high in the air before clapping back towards the crowd in salute.

“It’s cool when we’re in different buildings and to see other fans cherishing that moment,” John Carlson said. “It’s a big part of history, and I think he deserves the cheering and the applause for what a great career he’s had so far. I’m looking forward to a lot more of it.”

“That was pretty cool,” Carl Hagelin said. “I felt like the crowd was cheering more for when he scored than when the home team scored. It’s fun watching him make history. He’s done it for so long but he keeps amazing me.”

Ovechkin now sits five goals away from 700 in his career, which would make him only the eighth player in NHL history to hit the mark.
